Hi, I`m new here, glad to be in this community. I have a question: i currently own a PM-15S1 Marantz amp and a CDP Marantz 15S1, speakers are B&W CM7. I am looking into bi amping my system and i wonder whether the second amp should be different from the first one: 1. purchasing another identical amp is a good idea? (PM-15S1 costs approx. 800 usd in Japan right now) 2. should i go up the scale and purchase a higher grade amp from Marantz? (PM-11S1 for example, which goes for about 2,800 usd at the current prices). In other words, do i get a better sound if the second amp (which would be the master amp in the system) is of higher grade? I would prefer to stay with the same type of amp, since obviously its cheaper. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Bi-amping will definitely help the matters. Stay with the same manufacturer and the same line. A step-up or down model is fine. In which case you should feed LF with the amp which has higher power of the two.

Thank you very much for the help.
I do plan to stick with the same manufacturer, i like the sound in Marantz.
Deciding whether to stay with the same model or upgrade (to PM-13S1 or 11S1) is mainly a matter of how much i am willing to pay, seemingly.

I once again perhaps ruffle a few feathers here but Bi-amping in its most basic form is far from guaranteed to improve matters.

You are still supplying the individual drivers through a passive crossover network with all the implications coming with it. Ideally, this should be done via an external active network. - Some manufacturers have long invested time and resources to achieve that, Meridian being one of them.

I have listened many times to bi-amped systems and whilst the result is sometimes audible

... Part 2 (apologies, pressed the wrong button) ...

the difference is usually minute, not always preferable and certainly not good value for money when taking into account the cost of it compared to say an amplifier/speaker upgrade.

If you really want to go the 'bi-amp' way as it should be done ie. supplying each driver with its own signal directly you have to look at active speakers ie. inbuilt amplification or the afromentioned specialists such as meridian which I believe do all the amplification/crossover in the digital domain therefore eliminating passive crossover.
