Best way to mount bookshelf speakers?

Whats the best way?

I know it might sound obvious, but I've had a few people say different things to me so I thought it would be best to ask on here.

I currently have them about an inch away from the wall at the back of my desk (which is about a metre deep).

Would I get noticably better performance by building a shelf and putting them on that? Should I put anything under them (between the speaker and my desk?) I currently have little rubber feet to stop them scratching.

Hi, a good pair of stands will give best results, if not a solid shelf will be fine.
