best valve amp for around a £1000

Awesome! you will need quite a high sensitive pair of speakers though. Sweet sounding amp that can slam with the best of them.

Also have a look at Hybrid amp (vavle in pre section/solid state power) like DK design (LSA) or Pathos but need to up bugdet a bit more for a good 2nd hand example.

s/h Audio Innovations Series, Monos-Pre or an integrated. I used to have one and its a neutral, powerful sound. No flab there. Dont be put off by the relatively low power, it sounds like a lot more.

any speakers above 89db should be plenty load enough for normal domestic listening.
