My MILTY gold plated plugs are clearly too long. Is there anything essentially wrong or hazardous about this situation though? Should I bother rewiring them with some shorter plugs?

OMG - I'm just waiting for somebody to post that you need exactly a 3mm gap between plastic plug cover and socket to get a decent soundstage. :rofl:

Think logically.
If you used bare-wire ends you would unscrew the plastic bits and stuff the bare wire into the holes. There would be a gap of a similar size at the base end and a load of wire wrapped around it.
Yours looks neat. Yes there is a gap. But so what? Calling it untidy is a bit silly too, as these gaps aren't even in sight!
