Hi all,

I'm a hobbyist, playing around with some old equipment. One of my Marantz amplifiers died and was up for replacement. I got a very good deal on a new machine (AVM C8). Downside is that it doesn't have a headphone jack. I'm trying to figure out what I need to add to get one.

I thought of connecting a headphone amp to the pre-amp out but don't now whether that's a good solution.

On page 7 of the PDF (http://www.avm-audio.com/fileadmin/pdf/English/Operatinginstruction/operating_instructions_C8_C9.pdf) you'll see the connections the C8 has.

Anyone has an idea what the best solution would be to get my sound in a good way to a pair of headphones without linking to another power amplifier? (headphones I mostly use ATH-M50x and ATH-AD900X)

Thanks,

VDS

I'd add a headphone amp, but to the line-out, not the preamp output.

Agreed, much neater than mucking about with switching boxes on the main outputs.

Do not try and connect the headphones direct, use a proper amp. It must have a pair of rca phono inputs and a volume control, only thing to check is that the levels are sensible, ie when connected to your fixed outputs, does the volume go loud enough and does the volume knob have a reasonable range, ideally, normal listening levels should be around half way.

Thanks for the answers! A headphone amp it will be.

What should I use for line out: nr. 23 (output for recorder - fixed level) or nr. 31 (digital output optical)? (on page 7: http://www.avm-audio.com/fileadmin/pdf/English/Operatinginstruction/operating_instructions_C8_C9.pdf)

Either, your choice.

You will have to buy a dac/headphone amp if you want to use the digital outs, an analogue headphone amp if you want to use the fixed analogue outputs, recorder.

Adding even a pretty decent dac chip in a box like this will have minimal effect on the cost, see what is available to you.
