AV Receiver (Yamaha?) and two good speakers enough?

Thinking of getting the Yamaha RXV363 receiver and a pair of Wharfedle Diamond 9.1's to connect my DVD player to.

Without having speakers everywhere - I want a compromise between good music playback and a fairly good enhanced (better than tv speakers) sound when watching a movie.

Will the Yamaha create a 'virtual' surround sound field through two speakers? On the rear of the receiver, will they have to be connected to the 'Front L/R' surround speaker output posts or can they be connected to the better separate set of binding posts for stereo speakers?

If you're just looking for stereo, you'd be better off getting a stereo integrated amp rather than an AV receiver - you'll get better music playback for your money and the movie sound will certainly be better than just standard TV speakers. An AV receiver won't do any kind of 'virtual' surround with two speakers I'm afraid - for that you need something like the soundbars made my Yamaha or Marantz.
