I have been looking on the web for a while trying to weigh up what AV amp and speakers to choose for a home cinema system I am looking to build. My budget for an amp is up to £1000 and I dont really want to spend more than £1600 on speakers. Some of the amps I have looked at are Yamaha RX-V 1067, Onkyo TX-NR808 and maybe Pioneer VSX 1020. For speakers maybe Style speakers such as B&W mt 30, Dali Fazons or something by monitor audio. Can anyone who has this gear, or knows a little about it give me some advice as to what are good combos?

Hi joe_priest

Yamaha's RX-V1067 is superb. Sub/sat speakers to also consider are from Monitor Audio's Radius HD series as these form an excellent match with the RX-V1067.

All of the amps you mention will be fine, and if it was my choice, I'd be looking at either the new KEF T Series or the Monitor Audio Radius HD range. The advantage with the T series is that they are very slim and can be hung on the wall, so really look the business on a wall next to a plasma, as well as sounding the business.

I don't have any experience with the amps your looking at but have just
spent 7 hours auditioning three combinations of speakers that you are
interested in. The first speakers I tried were the Monitor Audio Radius
R270HD fronts, R225Hd centre, R90HD surrounds and RX-W-12 sub. I Liked
this set-up. It had strong vocals, great bass and controlled treble. The
second speakers were the B&W MT-30. The extra detail &
separation over the Monitor Audio's was obvious straight away, but some
of the warmth & resonance in speech was missing. Everyone spoke a
pitch or two higher. The last set-up consisted of the B&W MT-1's
& the Monitor Audio RX-W-12. A bit of a mix & match. This was
the system the experienced sales team had recommended, & I think
they were right. The warmth/presence (not coloured) was back and mixed
with the detail delivered from the MT-1's, sounded amazing. I thought
this was the best solution for me. You must demo everything you intend
to buy or costly mistakes can occur. This is the advice I've always been
given and it held true for me. The system I've now bought is unlikely to be reviewed in magazines such as this as manufacturers aren't keen on promoting other peoples gear. Try this set-up with your choice of amp and you could be a very happy chappy.

Hi Joe

From your list i like the B&W MT30 speaker package and heard them recently with the pioneer vsx-lx52 amp and thought it was an excellent combination

I also previous owned that speaker package and had them with a pioneer vsx-lx70 amp so know they definetely work really well with pioneers.
