Does anyone know if the balanced connections on the above are "fully differentially balanced" or merely balanced.

The CA2's xlr's outs are pseudo so the true benefits of balanced are not fully realized.

Thanks Rick. Not fully realized then (presumably you need the SCA2 for that) but is there an increase in gain using XLR ?

Yes, the SCA2 has fully balanced inputs and outputs. The SCA2's fully balanced design coupled with its other technical strenghts give it a massive performance advantage over the CA2. The SCA2 has been in production since 1996 and i have owned one for four years and also mostly used it in the shop for three years. The performance still continues to amaze me to this day. But at £4.5k it should.

With equipment like this, I wouldn't worry too much about whether XLR or phono interconnects are going to be better (although I appreciate why you asked the question). With this sort of level of equipment, they sound great whichever you use. The CA2/P1 is an extremely capable pre/power, and is among the best you'll get at this price point, whichever interconnects you use.

So if I understand correctly there are benefits to fully balanced connectors but, whilst my PI is so equipped, my CA2 is not & the XLR's there are no more useful than go faster stripes on a motor & are designed to make gullible fools like me think they are getting a touch of exotica. If the P1 is so equipped why would that be if it's natural partner is the CA2 & not the SCA2 ? Anyhow, I've ordered a cheap pair of XLR leads from e bay as I have no life and am a sucker for all this stuff. Maybe ATC should tell these guys about the balanced thing.
