I was just reading a review of the ATC SCM 50 active

http://www.stereomojo.com/ATC%20SCM50ASLT%20SPEAKER%20REVIEW/ATCSCM50ASLTSPEAKERREVIEW.htm

and they say if you have a balanced CDP with volumen control which is the case of my Olive 06 you can connected directly to de speakers.

if this is the case I can get the ATC 50 active just giving my Gryphon and ATC 19 without extra money. I am aware that I will not getting the best of the speakers connecting it directly to the Olive but I am quite sure it should sound better (and bigger) than my current combination and this will give me some time to save more money and buy a top class pre amp later or is to stupid what I am saying??

You can't just plug in a source to passive speakers.

Proper active ATC speakers (like the SCM50 ASL) will have electronic crossovers feeding a dedicated amplifier for each driver. (And they will cost a fortune which is another clue :) )

If I have misunderstood your question, then I am sorry but it wasn't entirely clear.

Mind you, that article you linked to is as clear as mud! It refers to the ATC SCM50 ASLs as 'active', 'powered' and 'self-powered'. Most confusing. Refer to ATC's own website where they say...

"Each drive unit in the active model has its own dedicated and individually matched MOS-FET amplifier, while the 234mm/9″ bass driver incorporates ATC’s unique Super Linear Magnet technology. Our active crossover network consists of a wide band-width, electronically balanced input stage with high common mode rejection and very low distortion."

Hi Chebby,

this is what they say;

The input is fully balanced allowing the system to be driven from a suitable remote source via long cables (up to 50M). In fact, the only way to connect the speakers to a source is via fully balanced XLR’s. If you have a balanced CD player with volume control, you can eliminate the need for preamp altogether if it is your only source.

get my idea?

He's talking about using the olive with its volume control direct into ATC scm50asl's, and being able to swap his gryphon + scm19's for the 50's.

No I don't get it yet. I know you can plug a source (with volume control) into a set of active speakers but you said...

... I don't understand that bit about the ATC19s. They are passive speakers. The Gryphon is a dual mono power amp.

Oh right!

Gotcha.

Sorry it's late. (And I had to unpick the post a bit.)

Chebby,

it is as Matt say. I will give my ATC 19 and gryphon for the 50 active. if I can conect the olive direct to the 50 y will aybe be able to do the up garde wihtout extra money and buy later a good Gryphn pre amp.

my concern if ist the olive direct to the 50 will be good enought for the moment.

There is a possibility it might sound better without another bunch of electronics (like a pre-amp) sitting between it and the speakers. Less is more (sometimes).

You need to check the output level on the olive and input sensitivity of the atcs. I cold not find the info on the olive on their web site or in the manual. Atcs input level is adjustable. It should work but try to find out olive's output spec.. You can also use fixed or variable passive attenuatirs if necessary. http://www.pinkfishmedia.net/forum/showthread.php?t=132457

Found it - olive balanced out is 4V, so you will be fine without a preamp, but you need an attenuator.

read the slimdevices wiki link above, it explains everything well.

If your Olive has volume control, then it can indeed be plugged straight into the ATCs and control them without needing a preamp.

I think you should try fact 8 and atcs actives side by side. You liked fact 8 so my guess is when you hear the atcs you will think that they have no bass. In fact, what you will hear is less mid bass harmonics, i.e. cleaner bass. I hope if you listen to both of them for some tome you will see that they are much more accurate, much more powerful and much more dynamic. If you buy the atcs you will qyickly get used to cleaner bass and soon will not be able to stand anything less.
So, the best thing to do is try.
You are about to spend a lot of money, so you need to be sure. Do not rush. Take as long as you want, enjoy the process of understNding what you want and choosing it!

Hi Eduardo,

Do you play hi-res music?

I suppose the volume control on your Olive is digital, so you should consider you will lose resolution at lower volumes. For Red Book (CD-format, at 16 bit), you will be fine, but 24bit files will suffer (as it is a 24bit DAC-chip).

Thank you again AlmaataKZ.

I have had the Facts since Friday at home and I like them. From what I remeber I liked the ATC much better but it was at the dealers Home in a sepcific place. Tomororw I will have the chance to hear both side by side at my please. very exaiting about this!

the deal without the pre amp did not work so I will get a Chord and a Cary valve pre amp to try tomorow and deside wich one I will keep.

Hi Eduardo

I've saw earlier today your system thread. I like to ask you something:

Do you intend to place the ATC 50 active in your actual living room?

Isn't the ATC 50 a bit biggish to that space...? Just a thought...

Best REGArds

is the same room but in the picture you are just seeing the half of it. it is 15 X 6. it is a uncommon space so maybe this pictures will help to understand it.

Hi, Ebentjerodt,

Seen a pic of ATCs in the 'active speakers club' thread. what kind of decision did you make and how? what were your observations from the home demo?
