finally just bought some atacama se 20 stands from ebay for £20 and they are in mint condition, i am usinng a set of wharfedale dimond 1 loudspeakers in cherry(old school) i just wanted to know how i could improve the sound and if they were a good buy.

You could try filling them with sand or Atabites.

ok this may sound really thick but whats the benefit of filling them with sand and the other stuff

Mass loading them increases the performance (not sure about the science behind this), I've done the same to my floorstanders and found the bass much smoother.
Here's a quote I found..
"The Atacama SE speaker stands feature a mass loaded bass plate for a low centre of gravity and a high-mass central column which is designed for easy sand or lead-shot filling for even greater rigidity and to eliminate the ringing associated with lesser stands."

cheers for that i will take a trip to b&q to get a bag of sand then.

It has to be dry sand, I don't think buiders or sharp are right for this purpose.
I've used play sand from argos and then baked in the oven for 1/2 an hour.
