Clare,

after reading the great review of these speakers I got very interested. At the moment I have some Dali Lektor 2 speakers. Will the DM1 speakers be an upgrade or are they at the same level ? The real-wood veneer is very tempting at this price also.

Have not heard the Arcaydis DM1's but would think the Lektor 2's are possibly a better all round speaker. They are a bit larger and go to a lower frequency response. The DM1's have a power handling of 40w RMS which seems a bit low. The DM1's are also rear ported so might not suit if you are used to the Lektor 2's. What electronics are you using with your Lektor 2's?

For an upgrade I'd go for some speakers at a higher price bracket. What about the EB Acoustics EB1's?

The EB1's are an option also, but I'm curious how the Arcaydis sound. They look awesome for the money, much better than the Lektors

I've just been looking at these, they have a 30 day return policy if you are unhappy (the only cost is the delivery charge). Surely someone will have a punt at some point and report back.

'The DM1s sound just a little gritty at the highest frequencies and lack airiness'

This is the only thing from the review which worries me a bit.

You hae to bear in mind that this comment was made when comparing them to a reference loudspeaker. I suspect that the reference for that comment was the ATC SCM11. Don't know for sure though. £275 versus £870. Hmmm.

That company was and still is Richard AllAn, not Allen. And there never was a guy called Richard Allan at that company. I am Richard Allen, speaker designer and co-founder of Arcaydis so I should know about the DM1 shouldn't I?.

Richard Allen. Arcaydis.

Ah, blame my fallible memory for getting a vowel wrong! Good luck with the new box, sounds like a bit of a winner by all accounts.

And do I detect a soupcon of "oh not that bl**dy 'are you that Richard Allen' question again..." in there?!

Now that you have sarcastically introduced yourself with your signature, we know who you are!

I didn't mean it to be sarcastic but the fact is that if I had a quid for every time I get asked if I am 'The Richard Allan' I would be wealthy enough not to have to make anything. That's how often I get asked it.

Just to give you a little bit of background on 'the Richard Allan', there never was one. The 2 people who formed Richard Allan Radio Limited each had a son. One was called Richard and the other son was called Allan. That's where the name came from.

OK. Thread has been hijacked enuff by me on this subject. Let's get it back on track to the DM1.

Richard Allen. Arcaydis.

tosh:Does the max power handling mean you are limited to a 40w amp?

No, but don't go overboard with the watts. 40 is the thermal power of the voice coil. I run these, like my other loudspeakers, with a Roksan Caspian power amp that produces 70 watts a side into 8 ohms and also a 250 watt per side digital amp. Just don't expect the DM1 to take the full output. In my experience, you can hear when a loudspeaker is getting 'stressed'. Generally, if you use a 40 watt amp with 40 watt speakers, you stand to do more long term damage than if you use a 100 watt amp and keep it turned down.

And, correct me if i'm wrong, also creator of the EBAcoustics EB1.

Andrew Everard:Richard by day, Ricky by night...?

We're getting off the thread here but to put things into perspective, I did not create the EB1. This was a joint venture. I created the cabinet but the speaker was actually voiced by Peter Comeau ( now speaker guru at IAG ).

At Arcaydis, we work with a number of loudspeaker manufacturers not designing loudspeakers for them, but consulting with the cabinetry. We are one of the few british loudspeaker cabinet makers left. The fact that we're not just 'Chippies' helps the process.

The DM1's material is all ours and not aailable to anyone else.
