Arcam A19 enough for ATC SCM11?

I'm considering a pair of ATC SCM11 speakers. But would the Arcam A19 be pretty underpowered (and underwhelming) driving them?

Personally I would say they would be fine assuming you're not going to be listening at disco levels and your room isn't huge.

Have you actually auditioned either?

WHF tested the amp with ATC scm50's but found that the Kef ls50's were a better match.

I think you would be better off trying to audition this set up or try the Creek Evolution 50a with the SCM 11's.

Thanks. I already have an Arcam a19 and Kef R100.

Was considering the ATC's as an upgrade, and would audition, but thought I'd canvass views first on whether it would be a wasted exercise/travel, due to lack of grunt.

I think you should be OK.

I would also do a shootout between the SCM 11s and LS50s, as these are (IMO), the best available around their price and a good step up from the R100s.

I did actually own the LS50's for about a week, when I first bought my R100's. In situ at home, I really didn't like the LS50's. While they were more open, detailed and taut than the R100's, the lower treble/upper mid glare and forwardness was grating. The quality of the treble was good, but I found it too bright and ''in your face''. I can't quite understand KEF's decision when voicing them. If the lower treble wasn't emphasised, they'd be stunning.

I suppose the reason for looking to the ATC's would be for better bass (speed and accuracy), and a more natural, insightful sound.

Fair enough, they are not for everyone.

Hi Goat

As long as you're not after constant disco like levels than the A19 has more than sufficient quantity and quality of power for ATC's curved SCM11 passive monitors

What source are you using?

I would expect that the SCM 11s should have more accurate bass.

Just a thought - you might like to demo the speakers with a few potential streamers, just in case it alters the way you view the balance of a future system.

I recommend Linn, but others are available. *smile*

The A19 will be perfectly fine at normal volumes. I'd be more interested in why you want to change your speakers? I had an A19 for a time and found it too smooth and laid back for my tastes. This characteristic did not change with different speakers. The SCM11s are very revealing of the electronics paired with them so the laid back nature of the A19 will probably be even more apparent. Just pointing this out in case you think moving to the 11s alone will give you a more energetic, lively sound, if that's what you want.

More natural, insightful sound, with the 11s yes.

Bass speed and accuracy, I don't think the A19 can do this in my experience.
