So after completing a very small budget set up for my daughter last year, I've now done the same for my seven year old son.

Patience has paid off, with lots of older amps seemingly holding on to a fair bit of value. In the end I managed to get a Sherwood amp sold as spares or repairs which works perfectly for a fiver. This is taking the signal from a Technics CD player (a very nice looking SL-PG500A) which cost £15. The speakers are JPW mini monitor (I actually had these as my first ever "proper" speakers about 20 years ago) which I managed to bag for a solitary pound.

Thats both my kids with cdp, amp, and speakers for less than £70.... Plus a few metres of speaker cable.

Anyone else had similar luck bargain hunting?

Not too long ago I bought a Pioneer PDR-609 CD Recorder for £30 as a spares or repair. It couldn't recognise discs, but a quick look inside revealed a piece of foam from a blank CD spindle lying inside on top of the laser. Removed that and it's perfect!

I use it as a DAC for my iMac and as a player/recorder in my office system. Best value component I've ever bought!

I also got a nice NAD 4020A Tuner for £40 boxed with all original packaging/instructions etc in mint condition. That was a nice cheap way of adding quick and easy local radio to my main system.

It's great bargain hunting and if you are patient and savvy, you can get some nice kit for very little cost. It's nice your children are growing up with proper stereo components instead of Bluetooth speakers or docks. I'm sure their peers won't know what a hi fi or physical media is!

Savvy, and patient is the key I think...

Yep, the kids love the actual process of "putting on a CD". I don't trust them enough just yet to allow them to put ona record, but they are fascinated. I'm wondering now whether to try and find an old tape deck, just to show them what a cssette is (and how much of a pin they could be!)...

I bougth a NAD C370 amp for £100 as spares, changed an internal fuse and guess what worked like new, sold 6 months later for a profit.
