Another concern with my Denon.

Hello people, I have another concern regarding my amp.

The concern is, that during operation, when I alter the master volume on the amp, randomly and occasionally you hear a 'Click', and you can also feel it in the pot when turning it, as if something just "snapped". Obviously nothing snaps inside because it works fine other than that, but I'm pretty sure these things are designed to operate smoothly (and most of the time it does). So when this happens its making me wonder if there's an issue developing somewhere with the volume control.

Any ideas? And thanks for anyone's time.

Do I recall correctly that you have a PMA720AE?

I think you potentially have a faulty unit there as mine doesn't display any of the issues you have raised. Dad also has one and hasn't reported any issues.

I'd take it back to the retailer and ask for another one.

Hi guys. No its a PMA-350/ii, I bought it used already but they did give me a 12 month warranty with it. I've only had it a few months so there's time to return it as a last resort. Before I make a decision what to do, I'd like to see if anyone else had experienced this kind of thing with an amp or receiver, and if it could just need a clean or some lubrication, rather than it be a deadly problem. I only experienced this once before and that was with a panasonic one box stereo system. That always seemed to work fine despite this strange behaviour. It eventually packed in though because the CD player went, and the system got stuck in CD mode and wouldn't change to anything else lol.

I actually played the Denon last night for about 6 hours none stop at variable volumes over a few beers, and I didn't have that problem as mentioned above. The only thing I did differently last night was to switch the amp on and allow it to warm up for 20 minutes of so before playing any music through it and when I did, the music actually sounded better than normal when I just play it straight from cold. So this led me to wonder if those problem occurrences are maybe caused by the amp playing too cold or by heat expansion while in use (something along those lines, I'm no expert though).

Thanks for both of your replies anyway, I hope it never comes to having to return it. I actually like this amp because its very simple in terms of features, but its very effective and sounds awesome, even with speakers as small as my mission 731's. Its been described as an audiophile type amp, just regular tone controls and a source direct switch to bypass the tone controls and get a purer sound. If I had to return it and get a replacement, I'd probably end up with something like a vintage technics amp or the such, nothing even close to the league of a Denon for the price I payed. I don't think I'll see another one of these being as rare as they are.

They were a popular amp so they do turn-up from time to time on ebay. Pull the volume-knob off and check that the the nut securing the pot to the fascia is still nice and tight. It certainly wouldn't do any harm to whip the lid off and spray the controls with switch-cleaner. Just don't use WD-40.
