Amplifier and preamp setup

I am currently using an old Linear Design AR -6000B reciever (they come under many different names) with some old speakers. When i connect an ipod to the receiver the speakers can be turned up very loud but when I connect a turntable (project debut carbon) it cuts the volume immensely, even when turned to full volume it only produces average/fairly quiet volume.

Could this just be due to the reciever being old or could it be improved by adding in a phono pre-amp? Or could there be another reason?

Does your receiver have an input labelled 'phono', 'gram' or similar? If not, it will need a phono preamp because a tuntable/cartridge puts out a few millivolts whereas the standard inputs expect one-half to two volts.

Frankly, you are unlikely to get very good results even then if the gear is that ancient, so make sure you can try before you buy.

Just to make sure you are connecting the turntable to the input labeled phono? I am sure you are but it's always good to double check.

I think the Denon Receiver is only for Moving Magnet cartridges (MM) and not for Moving Coil (MC), unless there is a dedicated switch for it on the back? What cartridge are you using? Some cartridges do not have enough mV for MM phono sections so the output is very low having to turn the volume way up to hear anything. Many MC cartridges will not put out enough millivolts.

Also, how old is your cartridge? Could it be worn out?

Best to borrow a friends amp/receiver with phono input and hook up your turntable to see which is the problem, your turntable/cartridge or the Denon.

Good luck, and let us know.

Thanks Happy_Listner. It's not a denon amp but still good to know, I am using the stock cartridge that comes with the project debut carbon, it's a MM cartridge. Also the amp has two phono options both of which I have tried, one only produces low output while the other doesn't work at all.

Any suggestions on a cheap replacement amp? Can be secondhand.

Thanks for your help.
