Amp or monitors ?

If given the choice to buy an amplifier and speakers or instead to buy active studio monitors, which would you go for ?
I'm wondering if I should go for some monitors as they will reproduce the sound just as the artist intended. No big change to the original sound.

What do you think ?

Depends on which monitors. If you're talking active speakers from one of the big marques like atc then i'd pick them. But you're probably talking something cheaper. In which case i'd stick with the amp/speaker combo
