Aktimate mini for small living room?

I am looking for a pair of open sounding speakers to fill my 12 by 12 feet room with crisp, full sound. Aktimate mini looks as though they are up for the job, but are these speakers meant to be put on stands and to be used as a normal stereo? I have stands and squeezebox sitting around waiting and will not be using iPod docking.

Perhaps the cheaper Audioengine 5 is better soundwise with less features?

I have the Aktimate Minis in my office / bedroom which is slightly larger than your room there and it fills the room nicely with sound. They are definitely better suited to being on stands so if you can, go with this. I can't comment on the Audioengine 5s as haven't heard them, but the Aktimates create an extremely good soundstage and I would recommend them heartily.
