Hi, I'm planning to upgrade my old headphone and get the 701. Has anyone used the 701 with the Arcam A90 (or similar) integrated amp? Experience to share?

I listen mostly to classical and jazz music, using headphones only late at night when family is sleeping. My current set, old Sennhiser HD525, works well with the A90, even if I do not get the same level of details coming from the speakers. In addition with some recordings the sound is too much full of bass frequencies. That's why the plan to upgrated to 701.

Unfortunately there are no sellers close to where I live and cannot arrange a demo.

Thanks

I don't have experience with your specific model of amplifier but have listened to a large number of Arcam amplifiers via the headphone output, I can't recall aver hearing a bad one.

With regards to the lack of detail and overblown bass I would put these traits down to the Sennheisers you are currently using. The AKG 701's will sound completely different from these, they provide a highly detailed presentation and some, including myself would say a bit bass light. You might also want to consider Sennheisers HD650's they perform well with Jazz & classical. I picked a pair up not so long ago and initially found them boring, but as time has gone on and after listening to various genres of music on them I can now hear there merits and one of these is certainly with classical music.

Thanks a lot for your helpful comment. I'm glad to read that the phones out of my Arcam int amp is supposed to work well. I haven't shelf space for a dedicated amp and I want to put my money to get the best phones. Now I have to decide between Senn 650 and AKG 701.
