Does anyone have any bets on when an affordable ( let's say £3k for starters) 4k projector will become available?

If 4k is the next best thing after 3d ( I really wanted 3d to work ;-). then the big players must be looking to include in the mass market projectors as soon as possible?

How should I hold my breath?

+1!

I'm hoping we'll see some announcements at the IFA show in Berlin in September. In the meantime my current projrctor's bulb is coming up for replacement... :-(

Why didnt 3D work then? Is it because people never gave it a chance then? All the negative feedback from consumers, its this, its not that, blah blah blah! Then 4K came along (So to speak) The major players just caught a cold. I watched a 3D movie twelve years ago,. Something called monster/ haunted castle or the like. Paper glasses, sort of worked, but pure sxxx in most respects! Then in 2009 the beeb did there 3D awareness thing. And shortly after that the technology launched main stream. I now have fifty 3D movies, got it wrong on the odd occasion. But on the whole, compared to that movie, flippin brilliant!! Well worth the punt. Just a real slowdown now of new ( Worthy titles to purchase) The pace of technology is resentless now. Hardly has something new a chance to catch on, and be time tested. We have a new what have you to embrace and adopt!

3D in the right setup, properly configured, and given the right envirioment , is simply brilliant. You cant just buy a player, 3D television etc. And expect to impress the family! It needs space to breate properly. 4K standard, a few years away yet? Time to give 3D its chance to flourish and grow and be properly received then?

Cheers

3D lost out the same as earlier 3D in that you need to wear glasses to watch it, and people hate having to use extras to watch TV or film, also most projectors and TVs need active glasses which users usually forget to charge and thus run out mid film, this inconvenience causes users to abandon 3D (Due to the hassle) and stick with 2D.

With 4K you do not need anything extra once you have the equipment, plus glasses free 3D is easier to produce on 4K sets, consequently the public will accept it like they did HD and everybody will be happy.

BTW: Active 3D causes a lot of fatigue problems for a lot of users and is another reason why it is a waste of resources, and thus being side-lined by manufactures.

Agreed, not sure 4K is for me though I am quite happy with 1080p and Blu-ray.

My guess would be 12 to 18 months before 4K really starts to make inroads into the consumer market, (The world is on its knees financially) with affordable (Relatively) projectors about 18 – 24 months away.

In addition, given the failure of 3D, I can see a standard 4k delivery system being agreed upon sooner rather than later.

Define 'affordable'... 🙂

It can only go three ways. If it isn't priced for mass adoption, it could will either become a dead duck like 3D, or more likely it could survive, but only as a niche market like Laserdisc. If it is priced for mass adoption, I can't see it failing due to the trend of larger and larger TV screens being adopted for home use. But, it will also depend on the falling interest in AV.

Weird that you didn't bother to read the bit you quoted. Y'know, the bit where he defined affordable.

Content content CONTENT give us all a free 84inch Sony 4k tv yes it's nice and state of the art but we are all watching the same bloody blu rays at 1080p unless you count the 4k remastered blu ray farce ,and in America Sony are starting a media streaming service eh ..... I will stick to my 1080p blu ray thanks ,so if you have a 4k projector and you're feeding it blu ray will it be any different .

how many upscaled DVDs look like blu ray??? I have the opo103 and DVD still looks like dvd

until there is proper 4k content to feed 4k equipment I don't see the point

when the dark knight trilogy comes out hopefully on 4k disc in the future how much people are going to use there 5 year old 2012 4k up scaling blu ray player on there new 4k tv

My question is really based on the usual "should I wait, or should I buy something else now" ?

If 4k projectors, let's say a Sony HW, at 2k-3k are on the horizon, then I'll wait. If not, then I'll look out for any special deals on the existing models ( like the HW30 or HW50) which already get very good reviews in the same price range.

I've seen elsewhere that a HW55 and a HW60 might arrive soon, but no mention of 4k. Just motorised lenses and memory zooms.

I think waiting for 3 and 4k projectors makes sense .my local independent cinema has digital 2k projection and quite frankly I prefer my tv picture quality .the difference between 1080p and 2k I think is 137000 pixels .i doubt with a properly calibrated tv we would be able to tell the diffrence between 1080p and 2k

MODERATORS - Can you please move this interesting and rapidly swelling thread to the "TVs and Projectors" section, rather than its being in the Home Cinema section, please???? (Two "please" 's for emphasis!)

I skim quite frequently. I don't need to worry about it though, as I know you will always be there to point it out for me 🙂
