Hi, I'd appreciate any advice as to the best way to connect my TV (Samsung 7020) to my Receiver (Yamaha RX-V3800).

My old TV only had one HDMI socket so I connected the Sky box and the Blu-Ray player by HDMI to the Receiver and then sent the signal (HDMI) to the TV.

My new TV however has 4 HDMIs so I could connect the Sky Box and Blu-Ray player direct by HDMI and then the sound from my TV to the Receiver by Optical lead. Would this be better?

Any advice much appreciated.

Everything inc. blu-ray to reciever & then HDMI to tv except sky HD, HDMI to tv, optical to amp.

HDMI has a wider audio spectrum compared to optical, except sky which transmits stereo via HDMI.

Hope this helps.

Even if your tv allows 5.1 sound through it (Unlikely) its a bad practice as its passed through so many more components and cables than it should (Almost certainly wouldnt sound as good as direct)

Bluray and sky hdmis should be connected to the receiver and through to the tv

The receiver uses the blurays hdmi for sound

Sky needs to be connected via optical to get 5.1 sound (Doesnt use 5.1 through hdmi which I find baffling and disgusting)

The problem then is to set the receiver up to display sky through hdmi but play sound from the optical!

You can connect the Sky HDMI cable to the TV if you want to watch without surround sound. However, you may prefer the ease of switching everything via the receiver. It's just a matter of choice.

Hi,

Agree with slewis on this one. All HDMI (except SKY+HD) to amp then on to TV. SKY+HD should be HDMI direct to TV then optical to amp - no problems setting up amp to accept video signal from one source while allowing audio from another.

Simples.
