I'm happy with my existing AV kit but following a move to a new house I'm keen to take some steps to improve appearance of wiring etc. ahead of decorating lounge. It would be helpful to get some thoughts from others on experience of installers and methods. Thanks!

Planned work would involve

- wall mounting satellite speakers and tv
- hiding/managing wires including to rear speakers
- tidying up aerial/satellite cables coming into lounge
- possibly installing ethernet to lounge from router across hall
- moving power sockets

Have you used custom installers or regular electricians for this type of work? Any recommendations in West Yorkshire?
What options have you considered for managing cables to wall mounted speakers/tv? (its a 1960s house with fairly solid internal walls so I'm not sure how easy putting into walls will be)
What approaches have you used for dealing with wires to rear speakers? Are they easily placed under carpets? (I'm currently undecided on wall mounting these fairly high or using existing B&W stands which are 'ear' height.)
Finally any good recommendations for wooden cupboards/benchs that will take AV equipment aside from specialist stands? I'm finding a lot of options now lack the depth of the old Ikea unit I had which is needed for the amp I have.

Equipment
Samsung 48" H6700 television
B&W MT30 speakers
Pioneer VSX AX3
Humax FOXSAT HDR
Sony BDP S760 bluray

Hi there.

Most of it can be done by your self just depends how far you want to take it and how handy you are... i found this place pretty good for all things custom

futureshop all one word in google!

You can also buy skirting boards with room for internal wiring as well. As long as you can make a neat job of pulling the old off.

But i got a sparky round to channel the wall for me (family member) Obversily you may want asparky to move a socket for you though. But up to you. Everything is easier if you have stud though.

I would keep everything at ear high if possible. But above all if mounting speakers and such on walls remember to keep the basics of hi fi in your mind. (Maybe make a simple plan )

Nothing to close to side walls and keep everything symtrical as best you can. Keep TV screen at relistic hights. Thats it really

Thanks for the response. Will take a look at the resources you flagged.

In terms of me doing stuff, I've happily done minor things like mount speakers in past, but I expect would get someone in to mount tv and to deal with cable management depending on what I go with. As you say stud walls easier!

Your most welcome!!!!

Oh forgot to mention brakets r us.... for mounting the TV, I have a bracket for my tv 558500 samsung and for £30 came with the most substanatail fixings i have ever see and there really freindly to boot.

Note do not mount the TV on stud unless your 100% sure your fixing in to the frame work behind it will fall off the wall. but im sure you know that.

Welcome to world of OCD cable management.*biggrin*

Rich,

I installed carpet tiles in my lounge in the flat 7m x 4.57 m and ran flat cable under the carpet tiles. I experimented with different positions to obtain the best place for the room acoustics as my ceilings were 3.8m high. The carpet tiles were the best in the industry and were designed for office blocks etc and looked like broadloom down.

If you have convential carpet on underlay with gripper around the perimeter you can run cable to the rear wall by putting it under the underlay. You will need to cut a void in the gripper so your cable is not peirced.

Best wishes

Chris
