Hi, I'm new to all this world of seperates carry on but have got the bug. I need to ask you experienced guys some questions if that's ok. Music choices range from Michael Buble to AC/DC, Nickelback etc. Admittedly mainly rock (unless the wifes at home).

1. I'm on a budget so have opted for 2nd hand kit and bought an Arcam Alpha 5 amp...is it any good?

2. I've also bought a pair of Mission 70series speakers.... are they any good as they seem to distort fairly easily? Maybe I'm putting too much volume through them but I do quite like the sound but then anything would sound better than what I had before.

3. I'm looking for a used CD player to replace the Sony DVD player I've got at the moment and with a budget around £60-£80 have been looking at a Marantz PM52, plus other Marantz models and a Philips CD723. Someone told me not to go for Japanese kit as I don't like an overly bright sound so would either of these be any good with my amp/speaker combo or should I be looking at something else.? Or scrapping the lot and starting again? (the wife will kill me, hey ho...such is life).

4. Can anyone recommend a good used dealer? I've seen a few on the web like Steve's Hifi's who couldn't have been more helpful but won't send speakers by courier (I understand why) and they're not exactly round the corner, there's also another one called Usedhifi Shop who was also very helpful.

Sorry to ask so many different things.....but hope someone can offer some assistance in my hour of need. Thanks.

The Arcam Alpha 5 amp is a good little amp and I'm surprised your speakers are distorting!

Where abouts do you have the volume when they distort (i.e. is the pointer on the volume control knob at 9 o'clock or 12 o'clock etc...)?

With regards to CDP;s have a look on eBay and see if you can get an Arcam Alpha 5 or 6 CDP. That'll gel very well with your amp and speakers.

The guy I got my amp from has offered me his Arcam Alpha 7 CDP (I think that's what he said the model number was) for around £190 but it's out of my price range which is why I started looking around at other options. I'm a bit nervous about buying off E-bay, have never done it before.

The speakers start distorting with the volume control around the 11 o'clock position. It is only slight and to be honest it's probably more than loud enough at this level anyway as I don't think my neighbours like Nickelback or the wonders of Angus Young at full tilt.

Would you not recommend either of the CDP's I mentioned? or what about any of the Japenese manufacturers?

Thanks for the advice

His Arcam Alpha 7SE CDP at £190 is a joke!

It's a good CDP for its age but you can get them for less than £100 on eBay; he's just dreaming!

Marantz CDP's will work well but the above mentioned Arcam CDP's would be a better, overall synergy!

2nd hand shop ideas would be:

eBay is just as good as well; make sure the sellers got good feedback and youre laughing

The OP is new to the forum, and new to Hifi ... so go easy

Stiffy .... don't rush into buying anything and am sure that you will get very good info here ... do lots of research, be patient, and perhaps your best place to shop (with your budget of £60-£80) would be ebay

a good cdp that sells from between £30-£60 id the Rotel RCD-965BX .... I am not sure how that would work with your speakers and amp, but am sure someone will advise

Thanks for all the info folks, I've just had a look on ebay and seen various Arcam models for a lot less than this guy wanted. Will research some more as you've suggested.
I've already spoken with the guys at Steve's hifi and the other place you mentioned and they were both very helpful. They both have a Marantz PM52 for sale but one is almost half the price of the other in apparently the same condition.
Thanks again.

You should be able to do fine Stiffy with your budget and eBay if you can find some good examples!

If you can stretch your budget to maybe around the £100 mark you may find a better choice.

Deffo dont jump at the 1st CDP you find though; may be persavere a while and see what crops up!

This would be worth looking at (finishs in 17mins though)
