Addition to the system (or replace is more accurate)

This morning been out to pick-up another Denon tuner, but this time the MKII version.

Absolutely mint condition. It came with original box, poly pretective sidings, interconnects, loop aerial, FM aerial.

Sounds really good; the clarity is better, likewise the detail and bass definition. Although have to say it isn't hugely different than the Marantz, Denon losing slightly on bass heft. Overall very happy. The signal is better than the Marantz... and it looks so much nicer.

The king is dead, long live the king.

nice one,i recently bought the denon dnp720 and can't fault the sound,at the moment i'm only useing it for internet radio ,theres plenty of bass, good gear for the money..

I thought this was going to be a big, radical, whole system replacement thread. (Bit disappointed now.)

Have you got a good FM roof aerial installed yet? If not, that will be a much bigger improvement than swapping one Denon tuner for it's MkII version.

Assuming you already have a mast for your DTV aerial then it won't cost much for a trained fitter to pop a vertically aligned half-wave dipole up there. (It will do a decent job with DAB too if FM gets cut off at the knees anytime soon.)

Yeah had the roof aerial up since we had the rewiring of the house and they changed us to all digital. I asked them to fit it while they were doing the 'high wire act'.

I didn't just swap one for another. I loaned the original + the old Alpha amp to thei charity company. They phoned to say they've decided on some sort of midi system so I retrieved the kit. However, a week or two later they asked Mrs. P if they could borrow the Denon again - they apparently aquired another amp from somewhere, so couldn't say 'no' after initially lending it to them, so told them to keep it.

This is the reason why I chose another Denon cause my area has crumby signals on occasions.

....update.

After a few days of listening to the Denon I'm impressed. It's not hugely better than the Marantz, but very different. Tonally it's slightly richer and this allows voices to sound a little more layered, while retaining good levels of detail retrieval. It's also picking up other stations the Marantz couldn't. Aesthetically it's a kinda match with the rest of my kit.

Would love to buy the Arcam T32 but...

So what turned out to be a test of whether the Marantz had a fault has ended with a satisfying upgrade to my radio experience.

The Marantz is taking a long, well-earned, sabbatical.
