Your first port of call is to ring around your local hi-fi dealers, this will usually throw up the name of a good repair engineer.

And out of curiosity, did you swap the speakers over to check that it wasn't the spreaker that has failed?

J S Audio Repairs.

Based in S London. John Sampson is Ex Musical Fidelity and recommended.

If the parts are available it,s fixable.

No harm in checking but don't be suprised if the labour costs often outweight the cost of buying another one. Round here they wouldn't pop the lid off for less than £50.

TBH I'm not even sure some of these Hi-Fi shops even have electronics engineers working in the store. I recently (last 6 months) purchased two defective amplifiers from various sources which had both coincidentally been for repair at Technosound in Milton Keynes. The first had a repair bill of over £130 and had failed again less than 3 months later for the same fault; I could see no evidence of the work they described in the invoice. The second was uneconomical to repair according to them so the punter brought a new amp; it only had one failed resistor which cost less than 10p to replace.

I'll let you make up your own mind if they are incompetent or just rip off merchants.

hi i know this is a long shot, im in south wales i repair hi-fi, if you can post it to me i would repair it for you and post back, im sure i know the problem with it as i have repaired many amps with the same fault of course postage would be an issue, but im sure i could repair it for as little as £20. most dealers will want £40-60 pound just to look at it then maybe another £50 to carry out the repair. im an I.T. technician by trade i have my own p.c. repiair shop CRYTON P.C REPAIRS. i would happily do the job for you as cheap as possible.

That's absolutely the most amazing thing I have ever seen, I am in awe.

You have managed to diagnose a fault from proxy from a simple fault description and provide a repair bill

Wow thanks for the quick responses.

Robg1976 would be great to take you up on your offer providing postage is OK. What's the best address to send it to?

PS did swap the speakers around

Hi Robg1976. Many thanks for your response. I'll check on postage first but where could I send it to?

Hi Novice,

I have to agree with Eggontoast, there are a lot of rip off merchants out there. Also, most dealers do not have repair engineers, and those that do won’t repair any equipment unless you purchased it from them initially. I came by a fabulous guy, via one of the shops in Croydon. I was very dubious about getting someone to do the repair, and in a phone conversation with the guy he told me point blank that if I could get the equipment to him at his location, he would give me an estimate for £15. Over the phone he went through what the likely cause was, what his ‘call out charges’ were, and how much the job was likely to cost.

He lives in Godstone, Surrey. So if you have a car, and can get out that way, and supply your email address, I will be happy to give you his number. Repairing stuff is this guy’s hobby, and he only specialises in hi-fi. His knowledge on the subject is astronomical, and he also does repair work for Quad. It was obvious from our initial conversation, that he knew my amp like the back of his hand.

Hi

Realise the location may not be what you are looking for but Bartletts in north london have a repair department, may not be the quickest as the guy is always busy but he has been their donkeys years and really knows his stuff.

Check their website http://www.bartlettshifi.com/pages/repairs

Had stuff repaired ther myself and always been happy with the service.
