I woke up this sunday morning, after eating a mc donalds breakfast my wife gave me, to go down stairs and watch some TV. But I heard a very small noise, like a buzz, so I put my cranium to the side of the speaker and I can hear a buzz.

First off all, Should this be happening? Second, can I cure it? Third, why does it do this?

Any help I would love, thanks.

Are you sure it is coming from the speaker?

Is the amp on/on standby?

I was going to say a grounding problem but you said it comes from the speaker.

I noticed a slight hum only audible when I have my ear next to the tweeter, obviously when no music is playing, I've been informed its nothing to worry about.

It is definitely from the speaker, It sounds like it's from the mid-range driver.

I'm afraid that's what happens after eating a McD breakfast while still asleep.

If it's coming from just one speaker, swap the Left and right cables over. If the noise still comes from the same speaker, the problem's with the speaker, if not, it's thge amp or other components. Also try disconnecting equipment from the amp and see to see if the buzzing is related to your cd player, tv or whatever.

Of course, if the buzzing is only audible when you put your ear next to the speaker, don't worry about it.

I can just about hear it from my sofa. When I went to the What HiFi show, I went to the test room where they had these expensive speakers in this room playing a film from Pixar and a concert from Justin Timberlake. While there was no sound, I could hear the buzz coming from those speakers as well. So it might be natural.

Which speakers, the TV ones or the B&Ws? Is a lot of your equipment crowded together or stacked one on the other? I've had issues similar to your description with my CD player sitting directly on top of my amp...

It is the B&W's. They are very, and I mean very crowded. I am getting a new TV and rack very soon, so I will give them more room to breathe then.

Then as Tarquinh suggests, switching other components off one at a time may help identify which one is creating the interference (since that's almost certainly the problem).

i would be having the hearing checked as well.

Very funny, let me re phrase it. It might help me Andrew if you gave a sensible reply. Are you happy? One last thing, I subscribe to your magazine, so don't treat your customers that way.

No sir, sorry sir...

But I think the other posters have covered the possibilities, and I'm certainly not aware of a buzz from our test-room speakers.

I'd switch off and disconnect all the components, then add them back in one by one until you have isolated the cause of the problem. Then it may be a case of repositioning whatever is causing the problem until it goes away.

You may well find it's an interaction between two components causing the problem, or a cable sagging into closer promximity to another cable oor component, or just the enhanced audible acuity created by eating a McBrekkie while still asleep.

Whatever, once noticed, such noises are the devil's own job to get rid of - and of course once noticed, you're listening for it.

When I went to your show, you had this test room with expensive speakers, I believe B&W, and the speakers had the same buzz.

...Or at least an insult that's rather more measured
