7.2 necessary?

I am upgrading to 2015 Onkyo 636 AV receiver. I have five speakers. Three front, two rear. Do I have to buy a 7.2 system?

No, you can run a new receiver with those speakers, it just gives you the option to add additional speakers later on if you wish.

As you don't have a subwoofer, make sure you set all your speakers to large on the receiver. It may well do it automatically, but it's worth checking, as you won't get decent bass if you don't.
