7.1 channels being used even in 5.1 films.

So I've not played that many films since I've had my 7.1 setup and hot fuzz is the first 5.1 film I've watched and all 7 channels are being used when it's stated as 5.1. And I think it's not right and I guess it uses unnecessary electric. Is this normal? I'm using the sony str-dn1040 and the sound setting is afd auto. Calibrated everything Right

That's normal. The AVR can split the surround sound over 3 or 4 speakers instead of 2. In my case, it's being split over 8 speakers! (side surrounds, rear surrounds and 4 in-ceiling speakers for Atmos)

5.1 converted to 7.1 means more processing. (More electric should not bother you!) Try straight/pure etc (different names for diff manufacturers). It may (or may not) sound better. My gut feeling is less processi g sounds best. Depends on room, equipment, source & ears.

The details printed on the back of the case of many films is incorrect. Sound formats and number of channels aren't always correct.

Is there a way to turn it off on my receiver so 5.1 won't be converted to 7.1?

hd dcs is the format I used to originally use but I had problems keeping it on as it would just change back to Afd auto multiple times on its own throughout a film and the bass would be toned down quite a bit which is annoying. I don't suppose in the manual it would say how to make it the default setting upon turning on the receiver?

HD DCS and AFD Auto both present the sound exactly as the source. So if surround sound is absent in the programme you're watching, it will automatically go to AFD Auto. It'll go back to HD DCS if you watch a blu ray film.

weird. That's never been the case for mine maybe I need a factory reset.
