According to Norwegian media this morning, Quentin Tarantino will be shooting his next epic in 3D, as will Warner Bros with the next Harry Potter movie.
The same article goes on to say that work is progressing well with the task of converting all the Star Wars films into 3D.

Looks to me that this new fad is probably here to stay a while, both in mainstream cinema and the home variety, with big hitters like these kicking their multidimensional heels in . . . .

id say its definately here to stay , yes theyve tried it before , and it hasnt took off, but this time , theres billions been spent , tv makers , movie studios , sky etc , they are all in there , it might be a slow burner , but its here to stay ...

Yes, I think they filmed them back to back.

I would say the big thing with 3D is how well the products ie blu ray players and tvs review. If they all get outstanding reviews people will probaly buy them, if any get 4 stars or below I can't see people buying them. It has to be a real wow factor for me.

Unless no one buys it...

i think in time , enough people will buy it , the money has been invested , why would the tv makers pull the plug on it ? even if its really slow to sell , its going to have to remain on sale ...

You mean like laserdisc and betamax?

Wasn't really the TV makers I was concerned about to be honest, but the studios. Look how much people moan about paying extra for Blu-Rays, 3D films are going to cost more than that. And you've got to have silly expensive glasses for everyone.

They'll be public outcry I tells you!

they might be talking silly money for glasses now , but ill bet it wont be long before they are giving away 3 or 4 pairs with tvs , i hope we dont have to wait too long for some 3d reviews , should be fun ...

interesting , philips today announced a new range of 3d tvs , due in the summer ,hmmm ? after abandoning 3d developement last year , or so they said , odd...

I remember seeing one of the first flatscreens, not a very good picure and about £8000 if I remember correctly.
Nowadays of course you can pick up an excellent screen for a tenth of the price.
I really do hope domestic 3D in some guise takes off as it would be a welcome kickstart to a somewhat stalled electronics industry and be honest, it does rather put the fun factor back into movie viewing!

But then again, Video2000, ElCassette, DCC and VHD all seemed great at the time of launch, each press release heralding the dawn of a new era, blah blah blah.

It's encouraging that so many major players, from content makers to manufacturers seem to be eager to bring new products on the market.
From a purely commercial point of view, if someone develops a cost effective and clever system for 3D post production, I'm guessing most of the film companies will be going over their extensive back catalogue titles and seeing it as another source of revenue and why not?
It happened with CD and if there is a market for it . . . .

I for one could imagine replacing my LaserDisc & DVD versions of the following films if they ever came out with a decent 3D version :

In no particular order :

Back to the future
Star Wars
Bladerunner
Mission Impossible
Minority report
Howard the duck (don't ask!)

In fact, any good sci-fi or action flick would be crying out for a good 3D treatment.
Dare I dream to imagine "Bitchslapped" or "StarCrash" in the new format?

It will be interesting to look back at these threads in a years time to see how right or how wrong we were to predict the future.
Either we will all be watching Sky 3D and 3D BD or we will remain dimensionally challenged until the next big offensive from Japan.

As Mr.E reminds us, 3D really can be likened to the Vogons - Resistance is useless.

Although you are correct, "Resistance is useless" is Vogon, Mr E actually wrote "Resistance is futile", which is of course Borg.

Quite why [people call him Mr E when it's obvious who he is, is beyond me

Don't you call me a square (bracket person), I'm known for being well-rounded!!!!

Erm, just to clarify, I used the term "Mr.E" in a non "cloak and dagger" way merely as I have never met said gentleman and referring to our esteemed host as "Andy", "Andrew", "Anders" or any other derivitive one can come up with using "Everard" seems to me to be discourteous, no hiden meaning or references intended.

But then again, that's probably the result of me spending all those years in a boarding school with only a Lafyette solid state stereo system as suplied by KJ Enterprises Ltd for entertainment.

I always try to be well mannered and courteous to fellow forum members and respect their views (unless of course we get into the whole "my digital cable is more purely digital & sounds more airy than yours debacle!"), in which case you are all loonies. (joke).

I wont be turning to 3D for another 5 to 10 years, and even in 2 years there will be some other new technology coming out that they haven't incorporated in the first round of 3D TV's such as wireless or the next round of bbc iplayer, TV web browers, social media etc

Andrew - can you tell me if they are making a 3D standard? - my understanding, forgive me if I am wrong is that Sony, Samsung etc are producing their own types of tech that will need different pairs of glasses to work? So if you buy a Sony 3D TV and go round a mates who has a Samsung one you wouldn't be able to watch it with your Sony glasses?
