2.1 sound from a full 5.1 / 7.1 surround receiver - ??

Is it possible to use a surround receiver to downmix a 5.1 or 7.1 soundtrack into 2.1 channels, in order for the receiver to output 2.1 channels only?

So, what I'm asking is whether it's possible to use a native 5.1 or 7.1 surround receiver to work in a 2.1 channel setup, or even a 2.0 system?

yes it is, but you obviously won't get surround sound. All receivers that i am aware of play stereo so 2 spkrs are no problem. If u then add a centre or a sub, the receiver outputs sound to the available spkrs. V easy to do using the auto setup which is on most receivers nowadays.

Excellent question, I have been researching this also.

If you go to the Onkyo website you can look at the manual for the SR505 and 605 which shows you which inputs to put 2,3,4,5 etc speakers into in order for the system to operate.

As far as I can see, you can add speakers continually until you have the full system, which is great if you can't afford the outlay right away.
