New poster here after some opinions on hi-fi set-ups. So got a bit of spare cash and was looking into replacing the rubbish turntable with built in speakers I bought myself a few years ago.

Looking at getting myself a new amplifier, turntable and speakers for a budget of £500. I've been doing some research and I think for each I'll get;

Rega RP-1 turntable,

Denon PMA520AE amp,

and Q-Acoustics 2020l speakers

I saw these had good reviews but know very little about this sort of tech myself so I was wondering what everyones' opinions were. Could I get anything better for my budget?

Anyway cheers, I appreciate any feedback

That's a pretty good system for the money. Also worth looking at various Project turntable for up to £200. Richer Sounds carry those, and a range of good value amps and speakers. Do try to hear before you buy, however, as anyone's taste here may not be yours.

Richer have the Marantz 6005 amp with the 2020i for £399 if you could stretch to them with the RP1 or Essential 2.

Will definitely check out the project gear you mentioned.

I did briefly flirt with the idea of the marantz but being a student I cant really stretch any further on my budget unfortunately.

I have been looking on Richer Sounds a lot and it seems like a pretty good site, where else is worth checking.

There are a number of dealers' sites I look at if considering buying or doing some research. These include Peter Tyson, Sevenoaks, Superfi, Audio T and Fanthorpes. Ideally, you need somewhere local, however.

If you are a student in a typical city, you probably have a number of dealers to visit and choose from.

Well then you've got Gulliford and Richer near each other. I've not been to Gulliford for a few years but they sold Rega then, and Tiverton and Tavistock both have good dealers - Tavistock HiFi, where I bought my Michell turntable, and Audio Destinations, run by a husband and wife team. Both very good!
