Looking for ultra cheap (temp) streamer...

Hi, have you considered a Raspeberry Pi running piCorePlayer? Given you'd be using usb, all you'd need is the Pi itself, a small microSD card, microUSB charger and a case. There's a DSD plugin for logitech media server, airplay is supported and you get to use the excellent control apps designed...

Raspberry Pi & RuneAudio Vs streaming box - with ext DAC

Before you consider splashing out on a new PSU this is worth reading : http://archimago.blogspot.co.uk/2017/01/measurements-raspberry-pi-3-as-usb.html The Pi3 "...sounds great to me and I would not be able to tell a difference between the Pi 3 or ODROID-C2, or Surface Pro 3 sending the audio...

Raspberry Pi & RuneAudio Vs streaming box - with ext DAC

Sorry, I failed to remember the scenario correctly. No DAC or DIGI board needed, just use the USB output. I already run LogitechMediaServer so piCorePlayer made sense for me. As it turns your Raspberry Pi into a Squeezebox, you get the multi-room syncing, iPlayer radio stuff, iOS and Android...

Raspberry Pi & RuneAudio Vs streaming box - with ext DAC

Use either a Raspberry Pi Zero W(ireless) or Pi 3, I'd use a Pi 3 with a hifiberry dac+ or digi+ i2s DAC. I'd probably start by looking at piCorePlayer (emulates a squeezebox and also supports AirPlay) and Volumio. I've tried a few s/w distros and settled on piCorePlayer as it's the most...

Raspberry Pi & RuneAudio Vs streaming box - with ext DAC

USB B-Type if you worry about jitter. Optical if electrical noise is affecting your amp (e.g., you can hear hum). Otherwise, whichever is more convenient as I doubt you'll be able to hear any difference.

Raspberry Pi & RuneAudio Vs streaming box - with ext DAC

There's really no audible difference whatsoever between different digital transports, but don't take my word for it, have a read of this: http://archimago.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/measurements-raspberry-pi-3-hifiberry.html If you're still worried about jitter and want to put your mind at rest...

    AVI DM5

I meant the person in post 118 misquoting, not you. I haven't seen AVI make those claims. So, ignoring the marketing and concentrating on the engineering side of things, what do you think of AVI's power-amp design?

    AVI DM5

The comparison/difference I'm referring to is an amp designed to deliver high instantaneous power for short periods vs. an amp designed for high continuous power. Which (BTW) is my interpretation of AVI's design goals. Of course, this might not work for people who like to listen to white...

    AVI DM5

AVI have published their spec. For DM10s it's: 75 WPC for the tweeters and 250 WPC for the bass drivers. That doesn't state rms vs peak or mention whether it's continous. For DM5 it's: Two Class D per channel 50 Watts I agree that isn't very precise. Ideally, I like to see more precision in...

    High-resolution audio: clarity or confusion?

Hi-res can do two things standard resolution can't: 1. Capture frequencies so high that to be loud enough to hear by humans they'd be painful and cause permanent hearing damage. 2. Increase signal to noise ratio from ~96db to ~120db. Of course, this is entirely useless as the rest of your...

High resolution audio. The science, or lack of...?

Thanks Fr0g, good summary and definitely no arguments from me on any of that! :)

High resolution audio. The science, or lack of...?

Fr0g, for those that haven't read the 900+ posts, what's your summary of the discussion?

    What speakers have you owned?

    1. Mordaunt Short MS15 - small sealed box 2-ways from late 80s. Inefficient and not much bandwidth. 2. B&W DM610 - large sealed box, metal tweeters, 8" bass driver. Boomy and harsh, wish I'd bought the Mission Cyrus 780s, but i was impressed by big drivers an metal tweeters. 3. Mission 753F -...
