£300 vs £7000 sound quality comparison

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD600 which I listen to via a Qutest and my amp which has a pretty decent headphone stage. I listen via headphones in the evening or at night I if I don’t want to wake up the rest of the house with listening via speakers. I’ve had some great listening sessions with...

Question Is expensive hifi worth it today?

How many thousands are we talking to qualify as ‘high end’? I think there is generally improvement to be found the more you spend, although the law of diminishing returns kicks in at a certain level/cost appetite.

Question Is expensive hifi worth it today?

Everything sounds great until you hear something better :D If you don’t want to spend more, don’t audition new components. There’s a lot to say for just kicking back with a decent enough system and enjoying the music like you say. Unfortunately curiosity comes beckoning…

Question What do you use for power

Tacima 6 way power conditioner for DAC & Streamer. Amp goes straight into the wall. I notice a positive difference of less noise with the DAC & Streamer plugged into the Tacima. I notice a negative difference (strangled dynamics) if I plug the amp into the Tacima.

    New year new hifi ?

No major plans for 2023 after some quite big changes (amp & source) in 2022. A power supply for the Qutest is quite a likely purchase. If some ATC SCM40 come up on eBay I could be tempted in order to compare them at home with my PMCs and sell whichever pair on I prefer least, without incurring...

    Streamer/source

Thanks for the kind words (y) I can thoroughly recommend the Qutest, it has definitely lived up to my expectations and the positive reviews. Peter Tyson had a couple of ‘nearly new’ ones for £999 so saving on rrp, which might still be available if purchasing soon. Re the BSNode - I’ve read a...

Looking for recommendations for a late-night listening system

How do Harbeth speakers fair at low-level listening? I have them in mind at performing well in this regard (and a popular match with Sugden) but not had chance to base this on personal experience.

Sorry Nick, I just noticed your reply. The Twenty5.24’s are great - if you like the PMC sound (which I do, having previously had OB1, OB1i, 20.22 and 20.23) they are a good improvement over the already good original Twenty series. As with most PMC speakers they like Watts and come even more...

    Streamer/source

The BSNode OS is up there with (and quite possibly better than) Sonos who have dominated this space for years. Plus the ability to stream in hi-res. I’m not sure what better alternative there is with this functionality and ease of use.. certainly interested in hearing any suggestions.

What would you go for instead of the BSNode and Qutest?

    Streamer/source

I think for the relatively (in hifi terms!) low outlay it’ll be worth experimenting with an upgraded power supply. Like you say seems others have had good results and I can try it on both the Node and Qutest. I’m really impressed by the ATC amp, it replaced a pretty decent Roksan Pre/Power...

Well a quick update after a few nights of listening to the new BSNode & Qutest.. I’ll keep it quite brief because to be honest.. the Qutest is sublime :) After approx 30 seconds of listening it was obvious that the Qutest is a significant step up from the Mojo. Timbre, tone, texture...

    Hifi bug has bitten again!

PMC Twenty5.24 are cracking speakers and they like a decent amount of power to sound their best. Looks like your Quads can deliver 150w each so would expect these to be fine. The 25.24s are good value 2nd hand at the moment at less than half the price of new ‘I’ pair.

    Streamer/source

Thanks Dom (y) Very aware it’s a chunk of change but will hopefully give me a decent streaming front end for the next 5+ years. I’m very happy with my amp & speakers so anything after this will be tinkering with power supplies, cables etc rather than big purchases.. that’s the plan anyway ;)
