    Recommend Alternatives to Rega Brio-R

I have the Exposure 1010, which would be an excellent budget replacement (50 watts sub-£500), though if the budget allows, you might like to try the higher spec model 2010S. The 1010 has great build quality, amazing ability to cope with dynamic needs of classical music, and never seems to get...

    Hegel h80 + Kef r300

For those like me curious to know why they've never read about Hegel anywhere other than on this forum (!), here are some reviews of the H80: http://www.hegel.com/products/integrated/h80/76-reviews/h80-reviews It gets a lot of love in Europe. Given how interesting the features are on this amp...

Can anyone define 'foo'? I see it used a lot on Hifi forums but have never seen it defined.

Budget CD Players - Which can I trust to be reliable?

Thanks to all for the helpful recommendations and advice. In the end I got a good deal on the Marantz CD6005 with an extended warranty and free Chord Crimson interconnet for £140 pounds cheaper than the Exposure. It arrived yesterday and, although it's very early days, it's clearly a very...

Budget CD Players - Which can I trust to be reliable?

Fair enough. I had often felt this to be fundamental, too. Although quietness of mechanism is important, as I often listen to solo piano and choral works. Anyone with experience of the mechanisms of a CA 351c or a Marantz CD5004/6005?

Budget CD Players - Which can I trust to be reliable?

Thanks for all the helpful responses. My concern with the exposure is the old DAC chip being only 96hz, most modern ones being 192hz. The CA 651C has had rave reviews in several magazines, including Hi Fi News. It has twin Wolfson DAC chips: 'Twin Wolfson WM8742 DACs deliver a significant...

Budget CD Players - Which can I trust to be reliable?

Having just received - and returned - a NAD 516BEE CD player within a week for a 'clicking' fault that affected both old and new discs alike, I'm still short of a dedicated CD player. At present, discs are played via a Sony BDP and Musical Fidelity V-90II DAC, but this isn't practical, as I need...

    Acoustic Energy 1-Series

Thanks, Matthew, for the reassurance about the amp. I love how it handles orchestral dynamics...never seems to break into a sweat. I'll be trying different speaker placement in the coming days, along with moving furniture/closing curtains, etc., to see what difference this makes. As I say, it's...

    Acoustic Energy 1-Series

Thanks to everyone for your help. This is the temporary set-up - that's a widescreen telly on a wooden plinth to the left of the left speaker. I know it's all a bit messy and basic - cables not long enough to allow for wider separation as yet. The speakers are on spikes, one on a granite...

    Acoustic Energy 1-Series

I wanted to return to this thread in the hope that Jim would respond. I now have the Acoustic Energy 103 floorstanding speakers paired up to an Exposure 1010 amp. I feel too inexperienced with hifi to go into great analytical detail so bear with me as I try to put my thoughts into words. This...

Is Hi Res Audio a Con????/ Please Read

For £160, the Fiio X3 is superb (the X5 even better, apparently, though larger and more pricey). One of my best audio purchases to date (actually, a generous gift from Mrs. Throppers)

    Question about media streamers.

Timely thread. Apologies for piggybacking on it with a question of my own regarding the Pioneer N50. Will this streamer work with any streaming service - I'm thinking here of Qobuz which seems to generally be partnerered with Sonus? Also, can its internal DAC be used as you might use a...

    NAD 516BEE CD Player Concern

Thanks, Matthew. It really is a lovely piece of kit. The only strange issue I have noticed sonically is with low orchestral strings (like the basses in the Adagietto from Mahler 5, or the bass line in Mahler 4's slow movement) which seems to resonate curiously. I don't know if this would be...

    NAD 516BEE CD Player Concern

Firstly, thanks to those on the forum who have helped me in recent months with their patient and thoughtful posts to some, perhaps obvious, questions. I have finally leapt into the world of hi-fi separates with the following: Exposure 1010 amp NAD 516BEE CD Player Acoustic Energy 103...

    An audition

Levit is an exciting performer. I saw him play Beethoven's three last piano sonatas at the QEH last October. He was totally immersed in the works, as tho' it were a battle of wills with the piano to realise this music. He possesses a Richter-like sense of scale. Wonderful performer.
