The Mac and Cno Belfast outing

Hi Mac, it would be great to meet at some stage in the future - at 58 now, I'm semi-retired and hoping to chuck it all in by the time I'm 62. Maybe then I'll make another trip to the UK and do the rounds, visiting old friends, including those in N. Ireland. Hopefully my hearing holds up ! Cno...

    Hearing degradation

Four years ago, I suffered slight hearing loss in the extreme frequencies (low and high). High frequencies sounded tinny and low frequencies were muffled. The ENT specialist said at my age, which was 54 then, some loss is to be expected but mine was slightly abnormal. After a few tests, he...

The Mac and Cno Belfast outing

Sounds like a good time was had by all (hopefully the wives as well). It's been 5 years since I last visited Belfast, maybe one day if ever I can pluck up the energy to visit my mates there again, I'll try and check in with you and Mac. Look forward to reading Mac's impressions. Cheers!

Extremely warm and Tubey bookshelf speakers

The warmest bookshelf speakers I've ever listened to are the Wharfedale Dentons, which are not expensive at all and have a beautiful retro appearance. After that I would agree with previous recommendations to consider Spendor and Harbeth.

    The VALVE AMP thread

I've only ever listened to two valve amps - the Japanese Audio Note which is sold under the Kondo brand name and Leben. The Kondo was paired with ProAc speakers (the D48 and K6) and the Leben with Audio Note speakers (the UK brand). In both cases the sound was fabulous - very realistic and...

    Esoteric Amplifiers

Good question! I'd have to confess that I'm not absolutely sure, and have to add that I'm not a big fan of Focal speakers, even their higher-end models. Too harsh and bright for me.

    Esoteric Amplifiers

I've listened to Esoteric amps driving Focal speakers in my dealer's showroom several times. In my view, their presentation is dry, transparent and neutral, as opposed to warm, organic or pacy (when paired with Esoteric SACD and network players). Quite similar to the Swiss brand Soulutions, if...

    Best integrated amp under £4000?

I would pair the Harbeths with either Accuphase or Naim amps. A lower-priced but surprisingly good option would be Exposure - its 3020D integrated is superb value for money. I notice you have the Marantz PM-14S1 on your original list which suggests to me that you might like the easygoing...

Out with the New, In with the Old?

Thanks Cno, I'm glad to be back - mainly thanks to Mac, who urged me to return. As for suitable amps, the Electrocompaniet ECI5mk2 might be an option since it runs partly in class A and has enough drive for the 40.2s (I think it's rated at 120wpc). A lower-powered alternative might be the Naim...

Out with the New, In with the Old?

Cno, I've not been on this forum for a few years and I return to find you've relinquished the MF AMS 35i ! I remember in 2012/13 when I was active here that the amp was your pride and joy; given that it's not made any more, it must have been a bit of a wrench to let it go... In any case, you...

Accuphase E-270 or Luxman L-505uX Integrated amps?

Mac is right about Accuphase pairing well with Harbeths - I can testify to the synergy as I use the two in one of my systems and I believe it's recommended over on the Harbeth User Group. That said, I've not listened to Luxman amps.

    ELECTROCOMPANIET AS filed for bankruptcy

My first visit in a couple of years to this forum and it's a sad return for me to read this news. I've always liked Electro gear, having owned the ECI 5 mk2 integrated and ECM 2 streamer. The latter had reliability issues and Electro had to courier a SIM card to me to fix some bugs but overall...

    RIP Tom Petty

Always enjoyed his music, alongside similar artists like Bob Seger and Bruce Springsteen. Sad loss. RIP.

What are your album(s) of the day regardless of format??

Been listening to an album on Tidal called Hendrix for Jazz by Various Artists. I was a bit wary of a jazz tribute to Hendrix, but my fears were unfounded. Well worth a listen.
