In the end I got an amp without an onboard DAC and went for a decent CD player. Chose an Audiolab 8200cd at an end-of-line price. Love the DAC functionality. And the sound is detailed and controlled. I dont agree with the many who find its sound above all to be "natural" like hearing music as it...
Hi,
Thanks for this helpful reply. Although I was impatient and had already made the purchases, I can see this is excellent advice.
I have gone with the Rotel and the AE301s (bought online and as an ex display from Richer respectively). This was reckless, having not heard them together, of...
Understandable comment given how I described the situation but nope, absolutely not. I am probably the most sceptical person in the world and was particularly disinclined to listen to a word this guy had to say as he was a wide-boy yoof who didn't seem to have much knowledge and was keen just...
Assume this was rhetorical question but answer is "Yes, obvs!" It was a Cambridge CX60A. Not overly impressed, for the record. And I love the sound of my old P25 so was predisposed to like it (speaking of biases!).
We switched the two transports around quite a few times and the store guy...
Thanks. An interesting set of speakers I haven't heard of before so glad for the pointer. Do not seem to be readily available for purchase right now though!
The AE I have available to me for less than half price.
i am somehow viscerally put off B&O as a brand...something deep inside tells me...
Yes, that's an interesting suggestion... I have considered that. I looked at possibility of Audiolab 8200cd second hand. I was actually surprised how well they seem to keep their value, based on asking prices! Mainly though I'm wary of reliability. My current player (such as it is!) was light...
Hi,
I might have to buy speakers for a Rotel RA-11 amp without an audition (yeah I know). Any informed votes for either?:
-acoustic energy 301
-B&W 686 S2

i listen to jazz and classical and want a deep soundstage with detail and atmosphere.
thanks!!
On the other hand, if I listen to a favourite CD two ways:
1) ripped and airplayed from am Apple MacMini over AppleTV+Arcam r Link
2) played directly on an Apple external DVD writer (!!!) airplayed via the same route
It sounds identical which kind of sends me back down the "digital is digital...

Thanks both. It's interesting to know that the CXC has proprietary innards, I would not have expected that at this price level.
I can see the wisdom of the "buyer's regret" conclusion! Problem is, although I'd take a preferred sound over the "nice to have" network features of the Yamaha, this...
Hello,
I am about to buy a new set of separates to replace my old system from student days and find myself lacking impartial advice. So came here to beg from generous enthusiasts!
I am considering a Rotel RA-11 amp but am unsure about cd and speakers. I have posted in the HiFi section with my...
Hi,
Interested in views of more experienced hifi people...
Yesterday I listened to Cambridge CXC transport versus a Yamaha CD-N301, both played into the same amp from their coaxial digital OUT. I wanted to buy the cheap player with more features and did not expect to hear a difference. But...
