Can we hear sound above 20kHz!

The point I was trying to make, perhaps badly, was that there was no point in me looking for a potentially superior and definitely more expensive system, because it was clear to me that I couldn't hear the difference. I don't feel inadequate, my position is in part down to a fact of life.

Audiophile witch hunt or basic common sense?

As an aside, I did see something the other day which amused me, the head of a vinyl cutting lathe was being driven by a high powered class d amplifier made by Crown a device much derided by audiophile's. I get it, they need a powerful and low impedance drive for the head, but they used a high...

Can we hear sound above 20kHz!

For me this discussion is verging on a moot point, and whilst you may be luckier, a while back I was in my dealers demo room listening to the various expensive items of hifi equipment that I was considering buying, when the young shop assistant joined me and commented on how much more ‘hiss’ was...

    What about the walls?

I have yet to see how bluesound will implement Dirac so it is hard to say, but from what i have seen of it it should be helpful at dealing with the main issues. I gave up on room treatment because of the expense and the impact it would have on my living space. To implement room treatment you...

Can we hear sound above 20kHz!

Just my thoughts on this. Humans evolved so that the strongest and most agile survived and that included hearing predators before they jumped on us and ate us. We didn't evolve sufficiently to hear bats echo locating , possibly because they don't pose a threat. Given the short time cymbals...

    What about the walls?

I’m afraid it’s much more likely to be the room dimensions that is causing your issue than the construction. Your room does look quite square which will reinforce the resonant frequency set by the room dimensions. My suggestion would be to try room EQ wizard (REW,) you can connect a...

    Peter Aczel

Interesting piece, and after many years of being suckered in by the marketing nonsense and the pundits it is a reasonable description of where I am at. I particularly liked his final point, that we should all remind ourselves of the experience of un amplified musical performances from time to...

Question Why Youngsters are not into Hi-FI

I think HiFi is significantly affected by fashion, and it’s currently not in fashion. I have known HiFi cluttering up my living space since the early 70’s and it sits comfortably with my idea of a liveable home, but I am slowly but surely being drawn in by a simpler system such as the KEF LS60...

    Power conditioners

Sounds like it’s noise generated by other equipment in your home, lighting for instance. I would attempt to find out what is causing the noise which could be air borne RFI or transmitted via the mains wiring or both, then solve the problem rather than trying to mask it by using conditioners...

    Speakers break in period

Mainly due to different room = different sound. The acoustic properties of the room are a much underestimated phenomenon.

Weird that so many audiophile threads are argumentative

I do see debate in other hobbyist forums and just like HiFi money influences peoples equipment selection and yet in my experience they are much more likely to have a supportive and healthy debate. I wonder if its because there is significant skill on the part of the participant in taking part...

Yes this came to my mind!

Weird that so many audiophile threads are argumentative

Well, I hear what you all say, but in my experience it happens far less in the other forums I listed.

Weird that so many audiophile threads are argumentative

As per the title, why? I’m a member of other male dominated forums including, musicians forums, RC (radio control ), astronomy, cycling and model engineering, (yes I have too many hobbies) and there is barely a murmur of discord. People seem so defensive of their choice of HiFi and it seems...

    First HiFi for a teenager?

If they are ok or like the idea of vintage, then a 1980’s beginner system would be ideal , I just can’t see many being keen on the clutter
