When every week was vinyl week: a look back to What Hi-Fi? 1976 issue #1

Furthermore the no 2 system in the first issue included the Garrard 86 SB turntable. And guess what ? I’m still using that too in April 2024. Despite everyone saying that was a right load of old rubbish too. ‘You pays yore money and you takes your choice’. Beauty is in the eye or ear of the...

When every week was vinyl week: a look back to What Hi-Fi? 1976 issue #1

My first amp was an Alba UA 700. It was great. It’s now up in my loft awaiting repair. I only stopped using it and replaced it with an Arcam Alpha+ because the dual ganged Volume and Loudness ‘pots’ developed flat spots and loss f signal in certain positions. Shame ! Robroy.

Cassettes, CD players and systems: a look back at the launch of What Hi-Fi?

Well, shucks. Amazed to see your no 2 system back then included the Garrard 86 SB turntable. I’m still using mine in April 2024 and it’s great. Despite recent reports regarding ‘vintage HiFi’ saying :- ‘It’s a right load of old rubbish and it never was any good, anyway ! Each to his own !

Question Advice about new speakers cables

Speaker cable is just a piece of wire that carries a very low voltage signal which travels at the speed of light. It makes no difference what you use. As long as all terminal connections and connectors are properly made any decently made wire will do the job as well as any other would ! From...

Second hand speakers ? Don't laugh - Toshiba SS33 Mk2. Made in England 1980's. RRPrice back then £120. Although budget given fine recommendations.

A friend of mine, who later became my best man at my wedding, bought the original Quad Electrostatics at the very time when they were first made in the 1950's. The first 'real stereo' I'd ever heard. The Dynatron power amp he was using only delivered 10 watts per channel at that time. But the...

If you’re more into hi-fi than music, that's a problem

'The Old Grey Whistle Test' is a good start to decide what 'music' to test your likes and HiFi too. If it's got a decent tune or melody of which you can remember and repeat at least a few notes in your mind or head, your halfway there already. Does its reproduction from your hardware match or...

I have that self-same piece of paper you mention right now, here in front of me, Mike ! Talk about being a hoarder - I rarely throw anything away. I have stuff going back to the early 1900's and even earlier up in my loft. Can't find my Dad's 1920's wind up gramophone though. HE must have slung it.

Thanks for the info, Mike. I try to keep all instruction manuals etc for all my tech purchases for ever and a day ! Even receipts from where I bought them in some cases. I've still got here Tannoy's original first ever stereo pickup cartridge and its Press Handout and review in my Archives...

Not heard better for the sixty quid (Trade price) I paid for these back then. It's very personal is music. Money was very tight for me back then. Wish I could have afforded high-end stuff but "you pays your money and ..." In 2020 I'm still listening to the music rather than the stuff it's played...

Two way system, quality build, excellent sound, tight bass, nice midrange, clear and accurate treble. All round bargain buy. Can see off much of the opposition. Still using mine every day and never heard better. I bought these new via a Toshiba Rep I knew personally after reading Mag reviews...

    Vertere Acoustics MG-1 MkII/Mystic

All well and good I suppose but I ask you, Nine Grand for a gramophone ? Wouldn't it be better to spend that sort of money on the vinyl itself ? Lottery Winners ok perhaps but OAP's I don't really think so. After all I need to eat you know or I wouldn't even have the strength to put a record...
