    Loudness wars

By the way WHF, I find it hard to believe that the people in charge of this forum haven't tried using an iPad to post here. But if you had, you'd know how utterly infuriating it is and fix it, right?

    Loudness wars

"Loudness Wars" is a term used to describe how record companies are fighting it out to have the loudest possible recordings to compete on the radio (remember, louder simply = better to humans). They do this through mastering. By squashing all of the audio up against the 0db brick wall of...

    integrated amplifier: vintage or new?

Get the Denon 520 or 720 if you can stretch the budget a tad. Then get the Wharfedale 9.1's.

    £150 speaker budget: Help me!

Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 at 100 squid delivered from SuperFi and pocket the £50. Best value speakers you're ever likely to stumble across. They *may* be a tad deep though at 29cm including terminals.

Confused with Amp. Out of depth. Help!

Stop messing about and just buy a Denon PMA720 new for around £170 ish. It's more than good enough.

Denon PMA 720 AE vs. Pioneer A 30 amplifier for warmer sound

Big vote for the PMA-720 here. Got one a month or so ago and I'm quite taken aback by how good it sounds. Really good build too. Can't speak for the Pioneer I'm afraid.

    Marantz PM6003 To PM6004

Ah, old thread... Still, hopefully my post will prevent someone from making the same stupid mistake I did.

    Marantz PM6003 To PM6004

NO! No no and again, NO! I went from the 6003 to the 6005 and was bitterly disappointed that they had somehow managed to make a lovely, peppy sounding amp sound dull and lazy. That 'upgrade' has cost me dearly to put right. Again, NO!

    PM6005 + B&W 685S2 ?

The sound from your optical out will be just fine.

    what software player?

PC with Logitech Media Server + SqueezeLite plugin controlled from iPeng on my iPad and Orange Squeeze on my Moto G. The nice thing about SqueezeLite is it can use WDS/Kernel Streaming straight to my Musical Fidelity V-Link which means a constant bit-perfect stream. Basically my fanless PC is...

    PM6005 + B&W 685S2 ?

I 'upgraded' my PM6003 to the PM6005 for the DAC and was utterly dissapointed with the downgrade in sound quality. I don't know what they did but it sounded lifeless and really dull. If this is "subtle" and "refined" you can keep it. I prefer my music to have a bit of life, punch and drama. A...

    USB or Mini-jack optical link?

Jitter can be completely corrected with a buffer memory just a few kb's in size. It's fair to say that most DAC mftrs can afford to implement a couple of pence worth of memory into their DACs. Then there's the argument that jitter is a total non-issue anyway.

    CDR Better than original ?

You needn't have gone through all that trouble. A simple null test will prove there is absolutely zero alteration to the files. You can convert >WAV>FLAC>ALAC and all the way back again 100,000 times if you like, but the resulting file will not have altered from the original. The 'night and...

Rega DAC or Audiolab MDAC to replace Cambridge DAC magic

Beresford Bushmaster II. As good or better than the aforementioned and a fraction of the price.

PC or CD Player or DVD Player or Blu Ray Player?

I wouldn't buy a Dragonfly from Hong Kong, there are a lot of fakes around, apparently.
