    The VALVE AMP thread

I live in Holland where we have the hottest summer ever. Next week an expected heatwave. So (unfortunately) no music these times. Although i don't have a SET, tubes still cause heat. I'm longing for the fall.

    DAC Suggestions and Advice

I think you expect too much from the soundimprovement of a new DAC. Other components could be considered as well. I can remember auditioning the Audiolab 800A, way back (early 90's). I found it rather dull sounding, too matter of fact. Maybe (also) some other speakers? I would not search for a...

    Open baffle speakers

Mine are Peitho 303. Kind of semi open baffle, as they work under 4khz as dipole, and above not. Also they still are 'boxes', but open (no port!). Looks a bit like an open transmission line. Very spacious, detailed, and even dynamic, because it's still a cone speaker. Although ill advised for...

Dynamic Range & The 24 Bit Audio Myth

Take also in consideration that many of us are aged around 50 or something. Our hearing also damaged by a few (long ago?) concerts? For most of us 'lossy formats' will even do.

    Dipole speakers

Mine are driven by a PP tube-amp, 40 W. Load is 7 to 8 ohms flat. Efficiency is 90 dB.

    Dipole speakers

To all: what amps do you use? I use a very good tube-amp which i.m.o. enhances the dipole sound. I trade a little of bass-amount for a huge clear 3d soundstage. Mine have no difficult placement. I think that is because of the semi dipole they are.

    Is thicker always better? Interconnects

I just use cheap plain copper wire. But then again i also use a cheap DAC . I don't think there is any other reason to use expensive cables, then to fill the pockets of them who make 'em.

    Dipole speakers

Nice that picture (Davedotco). But big they are. And nice your story (DocG). Advantage of not so strong bass is that i can paly rather loud without complaints from neighbours. In the end my set still goes as low as 35 Hz. It gives a nice combination of indirect sound but very precise imaging...

    Dipole speakers

Who has dipole speakers? And what are your experiences? At the moment i have 'Peitho 303' (from Holland), which is a semi dipole. It has a large opening (no bass-port!) at the back, right after the mid/woofer. It says that it's like a dipole up to 4kHz. (Years ago i had 'Magnepans SMGa'). I...

Disappointed with MA Bronze 5... or was it my fault?

As i have heard Monitor Audio sounds rather direct with some emphasis on the treble. It is not that you miss bass, but you could have too much treble. Try to demo another amp. Creek would be a good combo i think.

OLED TV - Permanent image retention

    That makes sense ;-)

    Valve Amps

I really had to trade some bass tightness for ultimate soundstage but did that with pleasure. Speakers are open baffle which means no exaggarated bass whatsoever, but still very deep bassnotes. The sound is very 'free' from any boxiness. I had an 'Audio Innovations' which was my 1st valve-amp.

OLED TV - Permanent image retention

Why did you already have 4 (four!) OLED tv's?

Integrated or Seperate Amplification for Dynaudio Emit 20

Why would you consider seperates? Only if you play records, i would say. Otherwise don't fill the pockets of those who want to sell you 2 seperate boxes.
