@Al ears. Not necessarily second hand, but lets see what's available. Have you auditioned the Tannoys or the Quadrals?...with the K3?

@Chris, I was fairly condifent that the 685s would do a reasonable job with the K3, and since i was looking for an amp with a good deal of punch, i opted to go for the first step upgrade on the amp, before the speakers.

Just for info, I finally bought an Arcam CD17 just before the end of the sales at a great price, and I'm chuffed to bits!! So much more detailled that the HK, much warmer/sweeter sound and much better control of dynamics - IMHO. Cheers for all the advice everyone!!

Cheers for the advice. I'm really keen on the CD17 I must say, but would like to hear it side by side with the Rotel CD06-SE. I realise that the older version of the CD06 didn't get rave reviews, but perhaps with the upgraded components, there might be some improvements? Not sure what it would...

Yeah I was thinking about that one, but it's quite a fair bit more expensive than the Arcam DD17 which is currently on special offer. I think that need to demo a few machines with my current set-up to see which one fits my needs best. Cheers for the opinions.

I'm just listening to my HK HD970 and there a few drop outs (unwanted pauses) during playback???? I don't know if it's giving up the ghost, or a problem with the CD disk? So the DAC option with the HD970 might not be the best option???? For a DAC unit, if you want to play anything other than...

I'm thinking along the same lines as you Jack. The Arcam CD17 that Plastic Penguin proposed is really tempting.... I must try and audition it ASAP. :) Ahhh the benefits of forums and the advice of others :)

So is it fair to say that it would be a good move to replace the HD970? Between the HD990 and Arcam CD17, what would be best? You can find the CD17 at about £460 at the moment, which seems to me to be a fairly good deal?
