    Back to passives!

It’s probably been nearly 10 years since I owned a pair of passive speakers but that changed recently with the purchase of a pair of Linn’s latest 119 stand mounts that I’ve paired with a Nord Hypex power amp. It’s probably cost an extra £1k to improve on the sound of the Elac Navis actives...

    Sealed box speakers

Dry is an adjective I’d also use. I once paired the scm11s with a high powered Nord Hypex and the results were mixed. Volume could go to almost PA levels with no distortion but the neutrality of the amp combined with that of the speakers made for a rather too clinical listen. Some may have liked...

    Room correction- mainly analogue setup

Yes. Linn’s approach to digitise all inputs, including phono stage, is controversial to some. However, they are adamant that sound quality is maintained and even maximised, especially if you use their active approach which keeps the signal digital until near the end of the chain (speakers)...

    Room correction- mainly analogue setup

You could replace your streamer with a second hand Linn Akurate DSM (some older ones will be under £1k). These have digital and analogue inputs, built in phono stage, room correction software (Space), and digitise all inputs before output to power amp. It’s also a superb streamer. Might (or...

Downsizing: can I get a similar sound for much cheaper?

I tried a couple of years ago to move away from my Linn streamer (Akurate DSM Kat) but the experiment failed - just couldn’t get the same sound from the (cheaper) separates. Good luck with your quest but I think to match the Selekt/Organik with cheaper separates is going to prove interesting 😉 -...

    Nord?

Yes. The prices do look very reasonable on their website, although there is a sting, I discovered….. the prices do not include VAT.

    Nord?

Hi Nopiano. Thanks for the reply and I do remember you having one some time back (like myself). Our speakers have been active for several years now and I’m about to dip my toe back into the world of passives, albeit for a limited time (maybe) until funds allow for driving the Linns actively. I...

    Nord?

I’ve just ordered a Nord One power amp to drive a pair of new Linn 119s (not bought yet) and wondered if anyone has any recent experience of using a Nord or similar in their system. My plan is to start passive and then go active with the Linns at some point. I would then move the Nord on, so...

    XLR versus RCA

Without checking the specs on your kit, fully balanced preamps will often be slightly better with XLRs and the signal is often higher than through RCAs. Like many have already stated, quality XLRs are relatively cheap compared to some RCAs. Don’t think this applies in your case, but XLRs can run...

Advice on best amplifier + speakers to manage a difficult room

Probably worth getting some decent speaker stands and vibration isolation for your deck but the kit will sound pretty good for the money. Other options will almost certainly cost more (eg sealed box speaker designs such as the ATC SCM7, although you can pick them up second hand for about £600).

Perhaps what some have been waiting for...

The new AE1 Anniversary look excellent from the photos and I’m sure they sound as good as they look. I’m also waiting to hear the new actives when they are released. Owned the AE1a for a few years and they were a revelation for the money - bested a pair of ACT SCM11s driven by a Nord power amp...

    KEF LS60

I once heard the LS50 some years back (soon after release) but the demo room was awful and the salesman seemed more interested in flogging tvs (Superfi somewhere- now gone bump). Even in such poor conditions, I seem to remember their strong imaging and accurate tonality. As to the active ATCs...
