    Audiophiles are Full of C***

I watched a Darko YouTube recently and he said that it’s impossible to hear music as it was recorded. You hear it in your room on your equipment which is not the studio/concert hall where it was recorded, or mixed, or mastered. As long as it sounds good to your ears, then that’s all that matters.

    Back to passives!

I think that how the Nord would ‘sound’ depends very much on the rest of your kit. They are extremely revealing and open but not sterile unless the rest of your chain is ‘dry’ by nature. They certainly won’t warm the sound up but won’t sound harsh if everything else isn’t either. I did use a...

    Back to passives!

Yes. I’ve read that about Linn’s power cartridge. Also, some would like them to be more powerful. They retail for £850 with 100 watts into 4ohm. Nord will provide their Nord Two Ice stereo for a similar price (1200 watts into 4 ohm). I heard the 119s driven by the Linn power cartridge and...

    Back to passives!

I thought that I’d struggle to match my actives without going far north in price but the Linn’s sneaked up on me! I’d read a review of them by Alan Sircom and he appeared impressed. What’s more, they can be made active (relatively) easily when paired with a Selekt DSM (I’d bagged one second hand...

    Back to passives!

It’s probably been nearly 10 years since I owned a pair of passive speakers but that changed recently with the purchase of a pair of Linn’s latest 119 stand mounts that I’ve paired with a Nord Hypex power amp. It’s probably cost an extra £1k to improve on the sound of the Elac Navis actives...

    Sealed box speakers

Dry is an adjective I’d also use. I once paired the scm11s with a high powered Nord Hypex and the results were mixed. Volume could go to almost PA levels with no distortion but the neutrality of the amp combined with that of the speakers made for a rather too clinical listen. Some may have liked...

    Room correction- mainly analogue setup

Yes. Linn’s approach to digitise all inputs, including phono stage, is controversial to some. However, they are adamant that sound quality is maintained and even maximised, especially if you use their active approach which keeps the signal digital until near the end of the chain (speakers)...

    Room correction- mainly analogue setup

You could replace your streamer with a second hand Linn Akurate DSM (some older ones will be under £1k). These have digital and analogue inputs, built in phono stage, room correction software (Space), and digitise all inputs before output to power amp. It’s also a superb streamer. Might (or...

Downsizing: can I get a similar sound for much cheaper?

I tried a couple of years ago to move away from my Linn streamer (Akurate DSM Kat) but the experiment failed - just couldn’t get the same sound from the (cheaper) separates. Good luck with your quest but I think to match the Selekt/Organik with cheaper separates is going to prove interesting 😉 -...

    Nord?

Yes. The prices do look very reasonable on their website, although there is a sting, I discovered….. the prices do not include VAT.

    Nord?

Hi Nopiano. Thanks for the reply and I do remember you having one some time back (like myself). Our speakers have been active for several years now and I’m about to dip my toe back into the world of passives, albeit for a limited time (maybe) until funds allow for driving the Linns actively. I...
