The Cable Conundrum. Are We Really Hearing The Difference ?

No. Use Ohms law and you’ll see why. Your cable needs to power an electromagnet to “drive” the speaker. The cable lengths, resistances, voltages and amps involved in domestic hifi are small. Often 0.5 mm2 wiring (like for a lamp) is sufficient to transmit the required voltage :) Plus copper is...

The Audio Cable Fraud (With Ethan Winer)

It’s quite hard for cables to make a difference :) Cables conduct electricity, copper is the best cost-effective & robust conductor. (Silver conducts better but more expensive & a bit breaky) The area of copper (mm2) needed for low resistance for Hi-Fi signals is usually small (0.5mm2 probably...

Hopefully the ears haven’t been damaged by the cd player

MA Bronze 50s making music screechy and intolerable

Just saw this, I’m guessing you sorted this, but as I have the same cd & MA bronze 50s, (different amp) thought I’d chip in - I don’t experience these problems, the I think the cd player is great, so I guess your cd player was faulty?

    CD collection ..easy play ?

You said you’re using pc to rip your cds? Once complete, copy file structure to some kind of usb disk. Get a raspberry pi. Install minidlna program & plug the usb disk in to the pi. Get a “streaming” app e.g. mplayer. Don’t worry, you’re going to use it locally. In the app find the dlna share...

iPhone - Apple Music louder than tidal

I've come a little further in my researches. I discovered a new tune on tidal - too late to lie by Lila Iké - during the verse I could hear that the ghost of a massive bass - typical for a modern reggae tune, but I couldn't hear the bass properly, not even on my wharfedales. So I bought the tune...

Old speakers, new tweeters are a bit too sharp

My 4 & 6 year olds going ballistic first time they heard Heartbreaker being the highlight for me!! :)

Old speakers, new tweeters are a bit too sharp

Gosh, it looks like I've seriously reduced these speakers capabilities over the years!! The original config was probably much better. I bought those Altai drivers in 2000 something, assuming the shop I bought them in knew more about these things than me ... then I bought the whatever (higher...

Old speakers, new tweeters are a bit too sharp

Haha, no. But it must be hard to short a speaker or crossover? You’d have to blow the resistance while also maintaining the electrical connection, right?

Old speakers, new tweeters are a bit too sharp

Your description sounds logical to me - tweeter could short circuit crossover, which could then short circuit the amp’s circuit. Sounds like Hifi components don’t necessarily have safety mechanisms such as fuses on their circuits?

Old speakers, new tweeters are a bit too sharp

Thank you, I may try. Yes, I’ve heard modern speakers ( my wharfedale lintons are very much better in every department). But the bass and (not sharp) trebles on my oldies are quite a bit clearer than on, say, a pair of modern “bookshelf” speakers, on actual bookshelves.

Old speakers, new tweeters are a bit too sharp

So you mean the wrong tweeter can, potentially, cause a short in the crossover?

Old speakers, new tweeters are a bit too sharp

How am I likely to damage my amp?

Thanks for the helpful replies; I shall accept the speakers as they are :)

Old speakers, new tweeters are a bit too sharp

Thanks. Here's piccies of the crossover & large driver. No info on the crossover, although they seem to be working ok. Wonder if it would be worth switching all the drivers plu crossovers out for a more "conventional" set-up? I might try ... The speakers have a really nice bass sound, and good...
