    Snake oil etc

Audiofoolery? Hi-foolery? I think we should just call such nonsense scams, or cons, which is what they are. Not me guv, I was too busy machining the perfect set of risers, to go with my 6” diameter solid tin cables that I use with my Bose cans. I cannot for the life of me understand the...

Need advice in buying first hifi system

Yes, American owned until 2001 when it became Japanese owned, then in 2017 it was sold to an American company. Phew. Lord knows where the design is done, probably manufactured in Vietnam or such like.

    KEF LS50 Meta AMP

Sounds good, if he finds a DAC-less amp he prefers. Yes, far from the one box solutions, as I said I thought that was an expensive approach. But it’s not my money.

    KEF LS50 Meta AMP

I know you said only consider the above options however, I’m a really awkward annoying person. 🙂 (I’m sure others will confirm,) You’re going for an amp with a built in streamer, they do seem rather expensive for what you get and you are stuck with the supplied software even when new streaming...

What's the most sensible HiFi purchase you've recently made or likely to make in the near future; Or, the most pointless HiFi purchase you've made?

Most mainstream makes have ear pads available. I didn‘t realise mine were flaking until I looked in the mirror today and saw I was covered in black bits. Sennheiser have always lasted in my experience. I had to throw a kettle away when the handle went sticky. Some brands don’t seem to care...

What's the most sensible HiFi purchase you've recently made or likely to make in the near future; Or, the most pointless HiFi purchase you've made?

My Kef LS50 speakers, a new amp and Wiim Mini. The amp is an AudioLab but there’s lots of good amps about. The system just works. My worst purchase is a pair of Sennheiser ear buds. They don’t block outside noise, wind noise is awful (weather not bowel) and the cable gets tangled every time I...

Review Wiim Pro: One man's view

I have the basic Wiim Mini, and as long as you already have a good DAC, and wifi, there’s no point spending more. It is very very good. Except the connector sockets don’t hold cables well, so best not bump it.

Review Wiim Pro: One man's view

Play-Fi is much improved and very useable. It used to be a bit crummy.

    Looks like a nice sound...

I certainly agree with that last sentence. It is certainly true that everyone has different hearing, but measurements give you something concrete rather than the subjective views of someone whose tastes might be orthogonal to yours. Plus for a cynic like me, measurements are a way round the...

    Cor!!

Okay, I should have said "no audible differences in sound quality" since there are differences outside the audible range. As to your interpretation, there will have been a range of people with a diversity of listening skills. If noone can detect a difference, is there a difference? After all...

    Cor!!

There is a prize that is given if anyone can recognise two amps of their own choosing, the only caveat being that one must be equalised to the other and they must not distort. Thousands of people have apparently entered, none have won. This indicates that there are no differences in sound...

    Cor!!

I have heard that its mother loves it. It looks to me like it was designed by a French car designer c.f. Citröen. This in my highly subjective view is audiobling, an overpriced amp with a fancy case that aims to convince the customer that it is special, when in fact it is just an audio amp...

    Looks like a nice sound...

I think we are own/owned the same PMC speakers, twenty.21. You are certainly right that owner enjoyment comes first, anything else is irrelevant. And if someone says you are wrong, stick two fingers up at them. Mine worked great for most acoustic music especially classical, but metal and rock...

    Looks like a nice sound...

Measurements of the K300 speakers show very poor performance especially given the price. I suspect these are yet another Veblen product. Also the use of a transmission line is a red flag for me, they are not needed, and in the case of PMC the ATL is IMO a marketing tool with no audible...

Getting a Hi-Fi system is a lot simpler than most people think without all the hype

There’s a clue in my signature.
