IMO: upgrading a phono stage from a decent or good one to a very good one (can be had for less then GBP300 second hand) brings an improvement in the range of upgrading a cart from a good (GBP150) to an excellent one (GBP400). And the phono stage doesn't wear off in a couple of thousands hours...

Dead driver means what? No sound? And in first case scenario if voicecoil melts, that's also something that would be noticed easily? If there is a fault in crossover element could result in simply speaker not sounding as good as it should - something not so evident as previous 2 options?

What can go wrong with speakers and how these faults manifest themselves?

How about best open back headphones 10-200$? That would be easy: Superlux HD 668B.Not the most comfortable though. But that can be improved with AKG pads.
