    Rothwell Attenuators

Yeah, that's the idea! I used to have a marantz amp that sounded rubbish at low volume settings and these things would have been perfect for night listening (neighbours). It's just that the amp I have now has plenty of dynamics at low volume settings and sounds better without them.

    Rothwell Attenuators

shooter69:Monstrous: It's also good for digital volume controls, as each step makes less of a difference, again, greater control. Sometimes you get that bit just between perfect and too loud etc... This interests me as i'm have some kind of upset of mind trying to get DAC with didital pre amp...

    Rothwell Attenuators

I bought these attenuators a while back and now they just sit in their box gathering dust! The claim is that they allow you to increase the volume control of your amplifier and therefore lower the noise floor (which they do), however they also alter the sound. In my case, the music was not as...

Cambridge Audio - Music Streaming Setup - First Impressions

Hi mrwozza70 I can't emphasise more, the difference high quality cables make. Trust me, I have several different makes and types of interconnect and they all give totally different results. Van den Hul are my favourite with 'The Name' being the best budget ones and 'The Wave' at the upper end...

why does flac converted/burned to cd audio sound poor ?

I've tried ripping WAV files from CD and burning them back onto CDR, just for curiosity! The playback quality in the cd player was terrible. Apart from the sound quality not being as good as the original there were digital artefacts present. I don't know the reason for this, maybe its the...

    HDD files or CD.

Andrew Everard:No, just that the internal transmission system, I2S, is better than S/PDIF Thankyou Andrew! You may have just answered the question as to why I'm having problems getting my computer to sound as good as my cdp.

    DAC & Wireless

It depends on the quality of the DAC. There are those that say a HD drive is a more stable transport than a CD player and should give better results. Personally I haven't got there yet, but I'm still experimenting.

    DAC & Wireless

A lossless file is processed to reduce its file size but no information is thrown away, unlike mp3. However some people prefer to use WAV uncompressed because of the extra work the computer has to do to return lossless files back to their original state when playing them back. The benefits of...

    DAC & Wireless

Blimey! when I read that back, I even confused myself! What I'm trying to say is that I am trying to get my computer audio to sound as good as my cd player and the V-Dac doesn't do it. The rDac might.

    DAC & Wireless

Sorry, I think my comment was confusing. The rDac has a WM 8741 chip inside it, similar to the ones inside my cd player, therefore hopefully giving a sound I am more accustomed to, when I play computer audio. The digital outputs on a cd player (co-ax or optical) always bypasses the internal...

    DAC & Wireless

I think the DAC you buy is key to sound quality from your Macbook. I use a netbook and a V-Dac connected via USB and the sound quality, even using uncompressed WAV files, can no way match the quality of my Arcam cd192. You may be able to get better results using the Macbook's optical output...

To Tacima or not to Tacima - that, is the question

I bought a Tacima mains conditioner and just connected it to my set-up thinking that was it! It can only improve the sound at best and do nothing at worst, but I would have surge protection anyway. After some listening I was convinced that the caps in my amp were worn out and contacted Roksan...

Problem making exact copies of my CDs to CD-R using iTunes

I wanted an exact copy of a CD so I ripped it using iTunes set up using WAV 44.1khz / 16 bit. I then burned it to CD-r at full resolution. The result on my hi-fi was a shadow of the original with digital artifacts in the first two tracks and the overall sound losing the presence and detail of...

New Mac Mini and Pioneer Amp - Will Apple Lossless play?

You are right about 24bit/192khz being related mainly to downloaded files, most studio digitally recorded music is in this format these days. It's then downsampled for red book cd. The good news is that if you download any of these files, your pioneer has a built in DAC capable of processing...
