Yeah, that's the idea! I used to have a marantz amp that sounded rubbish at low volume settings and these things would have been perfect for night listening (neighbours). It's just that the amp I have now has plenty of dynamics at low volume settings and sounds better without them.

It depends on the quality of the DAC. There are those that say a HD drive is a more stable transport than a CD player and should give better results. Personally I haven't got there yet, but I'm still experimenting.
