floor we recon - but wouldn't kick decent bookshelf/standmount speakers out of the room - he can nick his family food budget to pay for the stands if necessary - they are vegans so can eat tree leaves for a month if it comes to that :)

just gone for a Marantz 60006 on the back of this conversation - a bit over budget but newer than some of the 20+ year old jobs - and hopefully will last for another 20 (by which time I'll probably be deaf)

there are plenty of older denon, marantz, spotted an arcam for about £70 - yep I get that working may be 10 mins or 10 years although I'd prefer the latter obvs! Nothing locally on gumtree within 20 miles unfortunately.
