Are you sure about this? I think from iPhone and iPad it is ALWAYS converted to AAC. 16/44.1 is only possible from Macbook. (Even that is not a guarantee)

Sometimes TV's (or cable boxes) have a volume limiter on pcm out. You might want to check that.

During my ownership of Naim amplifiers, I felt the Supernait line approached what is acceptable for making my speakers sound decent (Proac and Harbeth). Still, the sound was just not remotely realistic enough. I'm told the Naim sound starts with separates though.

I'm using the Schiit Modi 3 just because I have one, and it sounds very good. However, these days iFi probably makes the best add-on DAC's and components.

This one's easy. NAD 316bee v2. Mid forward and punchy bass. Cambridge AXA35 is another option.
