It's not about new or old or expensive or cheap really, just all the parameters that make an amp expensive generally maybe is to make them perform better when played rather loud. Maybe when listening at lower level maybe it is just down to getting a set up that aids the Fletcher-Munson Loudess...

It really depends on the speakers though. Before I got a pair of diamond 9.1's I had a pair of denon/mission bookshelf's they just didn't go well at all with the as500 despite them always sounding ok with everything in the past.

I find it hard to listen to too but for some reason it sounds fine with both treble and bass turned up a quarter of a turn. The treble stops sounding so "hard".
