    Turntables - New versus "Vintage"

i would highly recommend going for a second hand Linn Sondek for as much as you can afford and you will have the opportunity to add upgrades in the future, i did this myself back in 2003 and never regretted :)

    Best amp for B&W 606 S2

i'm surprised about the bass on your B&W's, my house is shaking! perhaps the earlier versions are better.

    Best amp for B&W 606 S2

which speakers did you buy then? i moved from Heybrook HB2's to B&W's as i wanted a bigger sound and was pleased with the change, maybe not as natural as the Heybrooks but will do for now. :-)

    Best amp for B&W 606 S2

I am using a Rega Brio with B&W DM 602 S2 standmounts which on modern recordings (vinyl and CD) sound excellent though can sound a little bright/harsh on older (1960's) records.

Rant - Quality (or expensive) products supplied in paper inner liners

i always wash new records and replace the inner sleeves with poly liners before i even play them, my issue is with the occasional dished or warped discs! rant over :)

    Turntables - New versus "Vintage"

I have owned a number of budget TT's over the years including Dual, Project and Rega and discovered most of their drawbacks include flimsy build and rumble issues, bits falling off etc. but after using an Ariston RD80 (very underrated deck) for some years i upgraded to a Linn Sondek, imho i...

Question Is expensive hifi worth it today?

I heard the Sgt Pepper album for the first time on a small portable record player in June 1967, i still enjoy this album but it never sounded so exciting as it did then!

    Distorted bass

I 'm not sure if this a relevant comment but in my musician days i found bass players preferred smaller (8"-10") speakers on their amps as they said it gave a tighter more controlled bass with more thump, a theory something which could possibly carry over to a hifi system?

Midlife crisis "final" system & some comparisons

After 50 or so years I have always thought of my hifi system hobby as a journey with the "destination" always just out of reach, the present system being as a "that will do for now" ;-)

Question HIFI set ups are personal .

Many years ago when i started taking hifi more seriously i remember reading from a number of sources about keeping the signal path clear - over the years i found a few amps that had such a clear signal path ( including fixed headshell TT's) and/or with no bass treble and balance controls or...

Can anyone recommend a good vinyl record cleaner?

the wetgoat can be used for dirtier records as a pre - wash scrub , the record is laid flat on a cloth and the cleaning fluid (i use Vinylshelter) is sprayed on and the brush is used as a deep clean, then placed in the tank for a final wash to remove particles of dust, has worked very well for...

    Ultrasonic Record Cleaners

i did own a cleaning machine some years ago but after tests decided the Knosti DA tank cleaning method (with the right kind of fluid not the supplied mixture) gave best results. The electric cleaning machine was tricky to use, sounded like a loud jet aircraft taking off (so restricted to using...
