Actually a bit of both.
I know the floor isn't the most even in our old Victorian house. And just walking around the room can make the stylus "jump". If I had my own music room I'd definitely be getting a wall shelf and hopefully when we do move house I can do it.
I've only got the smallest...
The previous page on the user manual mentions something about liquid across the face of the record (crazy stuff!!). So makes sense.
I've set it up that way: balance the arm, tracking force at 2g, and I've now adjusted the anti-skating with matching notches on both sides. I guess this trial and...
I have a new (to me) vintage Thorens TD166 mkII that came without the user manual (or a cartridge).
I now have both thanks to the Internet (for the Manual).
I'm trying to make sense of the anti-skating bias adjustment.
Below is from the manual and just doesn't make much sense to me.
Right now I...
That's an awesome player for the price (your player). I picked up my Philips 610 for a mere £40. A real bargain.
I would really like the Marantz to track properly though. I'll see what I can find online.
Thanks for the pointers and the advice.
Quick system update:
- I manage to sell the RP1 for a decent price (nearly covered 100% of below purchase)
- I picked up the TD166 mk2
- Now fitted with cartridge (E3) and sounding quite nice
- Also added a phono stage (Thorens MM-008)
Thanks for all the good advice.
The CD-48 was working ok till it started cutting off while playing some discs. Not the power but the music would suddenly go silent for half a second or so.
Is that the sign of the laser unit "skipping"?
Can be replaced?
I was so fed up with it that I have since...
Thanks Al. It's sometimes difficult to think with one's head rather one's heart.
As a novice, the learning curve on how to work on the TD would probably quite steep (and painful and/or costly). You're probably right.
I did play with the idea of getting a brand new P3 but for now I think I'll...
So here I am trying to decide whether to build up an old P3 or go for a vintage Thorens TD166 mkII (£200 no cartridge).
Firstly, I know nothing about the Thorens range. I've seen TD150, TD160, Super, TD166, TD316. Could anyone shed some light over that's best to avoid and what can be considered...
I found this old thread as I am in a similar predicament (having to decide whether to build up an old P3 or go for a vintage Thorens TD166 mkII (£200 no cartridge).

I don't have any shims. Not sure the tonearm will have any in the box. I'm sure my local dealer will be able to sort that out as they're a Rega expert dealer.
Quick update:
I'm selling the RP1 (eventually my friend whom I got it off found the dust cover).
I was humming and ahrring about buying a brand new TT (but which one?) for a while.
I have found a brand new tonearm (RB220) for a good price. So the plan is to build up the RP3 with a decent...
Only possible candidate currently vs. the new P3 is a used Clearaudio Bluemotion roughly the same price. I don't know much about TTs in general though that one is much older (maybe 10 years+).
Would it still beat the P3 (new design) in a match?
